Wait! I think you might have actually identified its purpose...When you take people sailing and the wind picks up..... arbitrarily walk over and shift it a few times and change its position slightly.

Or ask them to do it. Of course, they will never do it just right and will have to fine tune the adjustment a little.arbitrarily walk over and shift it a few times and change its position slightly.
Well, from Will’s list below, that eliminates “Widget”, as I believe all widgets require inside connections, but for all the other items in his list, as I understand it, inside connections are “recommended”, but not required, as are backing plates. No connections inside.
I believe that’s what signal flags are for. I saw a poster of some “less than standard international signal flags” somewhere, that had such definitions, but I can’t find it now..."please bring me a gin and tonic."
Yes, but those are international signal flags. I was talking EXCLUSIVE yacht club dockside services. Gin and tonic was just a possible example. Maybe it's to signal a masseuse or for an extra in a hand of Bridge. One doesn't want to flag their needs to the entire marina and beyond, one wants to be discrete, one must conduct themselves with a modicum of dignity.I believe that’s what signal flags are for.
Good point! My thoughts went immediately to Rodney Dangerfield. I’m sure one could find perfect examples from him.one wants to be discrete, one must conduct themselves with a modicum of dignity.
