After a wonderful morning sail out to Sand Island yesterday (Saturday), one of the small islands in the Mississippi Sound, our return afternoon trip gave us the opportunity to see the riverboat MISSISSIPPI QUEEN steaming westward in the Intracoastal Waterway. With a nice easterly 8-10 knot breeze, my two other sailing companions and me sailed our boats (Tartan 37, Hunter 29.5, Elite 37)northward just in time to see the QUEEN pass by. Since there appeared to be no passengers on board, we later speculated she was returning to New Orleans following maintenance at some unknown shipyard to the east. Anyway, we enjoyed seeing her steaming by with paddle wheel churning all the way. Oh yea...with temperatures in the 70's and full sun to compliment the blue skies and waters of the Gulf of Mexico, we enjoyed a splendid day on our boats. Dick Dixon s/v CD EXPRESS Elite 37

You tell 'em Double D

It's not all just hurricanes down here! Got any suggestions for islands to visit with a 5-1/2 foot draft?

Drop off pretty quick on the northwest side. Your still going to get wet getting to the island but you can get real close.

Islands to visit

Sandy, There are quite a few places you can get into with you 5 1/2 draft. Petit Bois, and Dauphin Islands are a more you can get to. There are some deeper pockets along the north side of most of them. You just have to check the charts closely, and be careful going in. Along about the middle of Dauphin Island, there is a deeper pocket, around 10', that goes up almost to the beach.

Nice to hear from locals....

Rick and Nice & Easy....you guys are right on target. While I've never spent time at Ship Island or Cat Island, I am very knowledegable of Horn Island and Petit Bois Island. As Nice & Easy said, there are many places to anchor but you'll need a dinghy to avoid getting wet. But Rick, over your way towards Ft. Walton Beach, Florida....Big Lagoon, Pirate's Cove, Ingram's Bayou, Little Sabine Bay....there are many wonderful places to drop the hook. And unlike anchoring at the islands, there are many safe places to spend the night. Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Dick Dixon s/v CD EXPRESS Elite 37

You guys are feeding my fantasy life

Can you tell me more about the Islands? I live on a small island in Canada and I've always dreamed about the Missisippi since I read Mark Twain when I was a kid. Are the locals friendly? Even if you carry a five string banjo?

Dick, I lived and Sailed in Biloxi

We moved back out here about five years ago. My wife was sent back to Keesler to open the hospital back up and will be out there for another year and a half or so. Has Huck's opened back up yet?

That 29.5 Dudeck?

Was the 29.5 you were sailing with Dudeck? He and I compared notes on the 29.5 back when we both owned one. I haven't heard from him since Katrina but I have seen some of his pics on "Lat & Atts" TV. Did all y'all ride out Katrina there in Pasagoula?
