Plastic, acetal resin, or marcelon thru hulls?

Pardon the spelling, don't have the catalog in front of me. What is the difference in these materials? Why not just plain old plastic? Looking at adding a vent line. Assume that 5200 should be used for adhesive, maybe the fast 5200. Thanks, Tom

I would not...

use 5200 if you think you may want to remove it. This stuff will take the gel coat with it if you try to get it off. I think that the 4200 or some of the other sealants like Life Caulk products are more appropriate.

They're ALL "plastics"...

But by "plain ol' plastic," I'm guessing you mean nylon. It's a bad choice for thru-hulls because a) there are no UV inhibitors in it, and b) salt air--and even fresh air--dries out nylon...so it becomes very brittle and sunlight turns it to dust. Marelon is the only plastic material suitable for thru-hulls. If you opt for metal, go with stainless--at least 316--not chrome plated brass...or go with bronze.

Oops...I missed your 5200 question...

Thru-hulls should never be "cemented"...they should be bedded on the outside of the hull with a good marine caulk...and while you can also caulk inside, I've found that a rubber gasket--which you can make yourself--under the nut on a thru-hull makes an excellent seal. Don't use silicone! "Silicone sealant" is an oxymoron...silicone doesn't seal anything...it only fills space. Plus, it dries out and crumbles away. And btw, same is true for hoses and fittings...never use any sealant...only teflon tape should ever be used on hose connections.

Can I talk to you on the phone Peggie?

have some other questions and it is easier than typing...

If we didn't cover everything this afternoon,

You're welcome to call again any time. Talking is a lot easier than typing!

What about my fix!

If you start talking on the phone, how am I going to get my "Peggy's useful advice of the day" fix?

Speaking of seacocks ...

The marelon seacocks in my '88 35 are in bad shape. I have three under three sinks that are a problem (fortunately the engine and head 'cocks are working well). The one under the front sink, I learned after I got the boat last year, is busted in the closed position. I was able to close and then open (with much difficulty) the one under the galley sink a while back. The other day, I decided to "exercise" the seacock under the aft head sink. Closed easily, but was almost impossible to re-open (no thanks to the design decision to put them a few inches back behind the opening in the cabinet). Having decided I had exercised it, I figured it would now open and close easily, but after I closed it again (easily) it was just as tough to re-open it as before. Finally I succeed in breaking the handle off. Great. I've read you should regularly lubricate and exercise your 'cocks. (I get the impression mine have abstained for a long period of time.) I've also heard if you don't do this, the balls swell up, making it hard to handle. My question is how do you lubricate these things? Do you have to take the hose off and dump some oil in? Is there an easier way? What kind of lubricant? My next post will probably be about how to keep your boat from sinking while in the process of trying to screw on a new 'cock. Hey! What's all that snickering about??

Bryan C, your on the edge!

Bryan: I gotta tell you that was a great discussion without going over the line (well maybe). I do not think that I would try to replace the seacock while your vessel is in the water. Not enough room to work and if anything goes wrong..... well you know. As far a lubrication goes, I would think that water proof grease would be the ticket here.

Bryan, cracked me up! Good luck.

Also thanks Steve and of course Peggie, won't be using 5200.

Bryan!@#?

Bryan: Do you really think we should go there? Use your imagination and just tell us about it.

Or don't tell us about it...

...unless, of course, you were actually able to get the 'cocks balls lubricated well enough to prevent the 'cocks breakage due to its stiffness. If it works, I'd love to know since I am reluctant to replace mine.

Seriously now folks ...

I suppose it is futile to try to suggest that the innuendo of the "grease" question was unintended. And I realize that the slim chance I have of actually getting a straight answer at this point is completely my fault -- but do you have to take the hose off and apply the grease on the ball? Seems like a lot of work. Or are there nipples (oh, no) that you can grease?

Absolutely the best

Help!! I've split my gut laughing at you guys and everything below my waterline is now wet!!! Thanks a million to everyone who contributed to that piece of fun and information?? on seacocks and whatever else!! My question is 'Is all the fun over or should I stay tuned?? Tom Ehmke

Oh no,

Tom: If you ever think it's over on this web site, you are hooked up with the wrong crowd. We may be comming to the end of the thread but there is another one to takes it place.

It's all Peggy's fault

What do you expect from a BB with a forum featuring the (our beloved) "Head Mistress"?

OK guys

We're already on the edge of having to list this place as an "adult content site..."
