I just had a USCG inspection and they mentioned I needed two. On the 310 (your mileage for the 309 will vary of course) are

V-Berth
Nav Station next to galley
Lazarrette
Head

The most likely places for fire are the galley and engine, so you want to have one between where you are most likely to be and those.

We carry two. One's mounted on the wall under the companionway...just aft of the engine box. We took out the door to the aft cabin, along with the non-supporting wall next to the engine box. Used the fire extinguisher to hide a couple of the holes that were left behind from the wall removal. With or without the door and wall removal, this could be a good place to mount your extinguisher, as it's close to the galley.

Our other extinguisher is kept in the cockpit, in the small, aft, starboard locker. If there's a fire down below (sounds like Bob Seger?!?!) while I'm in the cockpit, I don't want to have to go below to get the extinguisher.

I have two - one mounted above the engine box in the step area, on the side bulhead adjacent to the galley (note you have to remove it to swing open the engine box). The other is on the starboard bulkhead in the forward cabin. I'm planning to mount one in a cockpit locker as well - just haven't gotten to it yet.

I just purchased a new fire extinguisher for the cockpit - I put it in the starboard aft locker (I have a tray over the water heater).

There is a second extinguisher in the cubby hole below the stove and a third forward in the 'owner's cabin'.

I have considered boring a small hole and installing an air tight cover in the bulkhead between the aft cabin and the engine compartment. In the event of a fire in the engine compartment, with a small CO2 extinguisher you could open the small cover and insert the nozzle and dump CO2 into the space without opening the engine access cover. Reseal the cover and monitor for heat. If this extinguished the fire you could monitor for re-ignition - if not, it would give you time to prepare to open the access hatch to attack the fire with a larger dry-chem extinguisher. All of this after making the appropriate pan pan or mayday comms.

Regards,

Chris
