.357

A .357 will shoot .357 and .38 caliber rounds. They also make bird shot rounds for a .357 that I have used to get rid of some rats in an aviary. It is a very versatile handgun. I target practice with .38 rounds and a few .357 magnums. I keep .357 magnum rounds in it. Between my Ruger GP100 .357 and my Remington 30.06, I am ready for the zombie apocolypse. I would be a little concerned about bringing them into a foriegn country.

Does anybody know if you can hand over your weapons on the way into a country that prohibits them, and have them returned when you leave the country?

You dont need guns

to land you in jail in a foreign country. One bullet is all it takes.

The truth of the matter is that you are more likely to be killed in a violent crime in the US than almost anywhere in the world, except for maybe Africa.
Advice: If you are too scared to travel, dont. If you sneak a gun or a bullet into some of the island nations in the Carribbean or into Mexico, you will go to jail for a very very long time. And have your family mail you a sandwich once in a while.

Really?

"The truth of the matter is that you are more likely to be killed in a violent crime in the US than almost anywhere in the world, except for maybe Africa."

That's nonsense. Want to cite your source for that?

"The truth of the matter is that you are more likely to be killed in a violent crime in the US than almost anywhere in the world, except for maybe Africa."

Apropos this discussion: when was the last pirating of a private vessel and murder of the owners/crew in the U.S.?

Don't confuse incidence of crime reporting with incidence of crime. We in the U.S. do a much better job than most of the world recording and reporting violent crime. In much of the world it simply goes unreported, and the only statistics are those manufactured and supplied by the governments.

I'm so tired of the hate America, blame America first crowd.

Regarding those crime stats in the U.S. - if you are not actively involved in the illicit drug trade or other organized crime activities, your chances of being killed in a crime are near zero. Much lower if you have the means to deter or stop the crime.

nationmaster.com

not the latest statistics but close enough.
US ranks #24 in murder rate, # 6 in assualts and # 9 in rapes. This is out of approx. 65 nations. We rank in the upper 1/2 for sure.
Some of the more common and desireable cruising grounds such as the Bahamas and the BVI are not even on the list.
Maybe you ought to read the newspapers.
This is not a hate America/ blame America thing. This is real world. In this country we dont call it pirates. Its just some tourist got killed in a shopping center.
Besides, this is not a political post, as you just turned it into.
Take out your frustrations elsewhere.
Dont read the news or watch TV? Fine, thats your right, but to deny that American is a dangerous place is pure foolishnes.

JVISS : Totally rediculous

" if you are not actively involved in the illicit drug trade or other organized crime activities, your chances of being killed in a crime are near zero."
I would hate to think that if my parents or grandparents were killed in a convenience store robbery, or a carjaking, a moron like you would accuse them of being drug dealers or members of organized crime.

Understanding statistics.

Tony B., you are the one who made it political, and now have made it personal.

As I aserted before, there are vast differences in reporting of crimes in different countries. Do you lock you boat when you leave it in Martha's Vineyard? Would you lock it when you leave it in Columbia, or Venezuala? If something seems contradictory, question your premises - or at least, your statistics.

Looking at the per-capita murder stats - top nations; Columbia, South Africa, Jamaica, Venezuala, Russia, Mexico, Estonia, etc. Let's see what did you say? Oh, yes: "The truth of the matter is that you are more likely to be killed in a violent crime in the US than almost anywhere in the world, except for maybe Africa." What "truth" is this? It is, as I said, nonsense. Or, more accurately, untrue. In the U.S., factor out the drug and organized crime "internal" killing, and factor in the incidence of crime reporting in the concerned countries, and the US is probably the safest country in the world, and the most likely place that an armed citizen will come to your aid.

Note also, in the nationmaster, China, Brazil, and some other quite populous countries aren't even on the list.

Never mind

Tony, your resort to name calling is juvenile and inappropriate here. I won't continue this discussion with you.

I am nearly 70 years on the earth and have never had

the need or opportunity to defend my home or my person from a criminal. I am well trained in the use of firearms and have been shooting since I was a kid.

Researched this Extensively as Part of a Crew

I was part of a crew that took a 50’ trawler to the Bahamas down to Grenada and then over to the west Coast of Central America and back to the Florida panhandle we were in several different legs switching out in various locations as we went. There was no question that there was not to be any trying to hide a weapon.

From there we sought answers to a few other questions. Who would use the weapon? Two thirds of us were retired military and half of those Army veterans with combat experience so we felt confident that we could train everyone appropriately.

Second, what weapons to bring? Handguns were deemed to be almost ineffectual we decided on shotguns and long guns actually two shotguns two AR-15s and an AK-47 as that was what was available to us.

Third were could we go with weapons aboard. There were some places we knew absolutely we could not go, Puerto Rico for one. Other places maybe and some where we could only enter and exit from one customs port.

In the end we decided that at eight knots we would never be able to out run the pirates and probably would not be able to out gun them perhaps even make us a greater target knowing that there were weapons on board. So we decided no weapons and relied on stealth, an abundance of caution and common sense. Over the course of the eight month cruise there were no incidents whatsoever.

I’ll go to the end to defend our inalienable right to possess arms but hope most of them idiots leave them in the closet buried under forgotten Christmas decorations. This subject keeps coming up and ending up in a fur ball when few of those involved ever go anywhere where it is an issue.

Rick

Curious question....why not weapons in PR?. PR is an American Commonwealth. I was next door in St. Thomas and had no problems with the law and a hand gun. I just couldn't carry it around but if left on my boat it was OK. I know the V.I.'s are territories and PR is a commonwealth which means different status.
What are the laws in PR regarding weapons?
Also, I would never take a weapon into foreign waters unless I had permission, in writing, first.
Every so often, there is a show on 20/20 or some other similar show about an American couple on a sailboat in some island in the Carribbean, cant remember which. Anyway, a customs search turned up 3 bullets found in the back of a draw, I think. No weapons, just 3 bullets, obviously an innocent oversight but they still spent a lot of time in jail. I dont remember the particulars, but I'm sure someone can Google it.

Don't Know Tony

We thought it odd as well. Maybe it is different now just like being able to own a gun in DC now. Mexico was another place we could not get good solid info on. To go hunting in Mexico you can ship your weapon in and out but you can't transport it yourself. Guess Black Jack Pershing's guy were the last ones to do so. By that time we had pretty much decided to forgo any firearms.

And where do you get your facts. Certainly not anywhere around this part of the country. There are regular reports in New Orleans of tourists being mugged, robbed at gunpoint or killed in New Orleans. Almost a daily deal. I can't think of anywhere in the Caribbean I would feel less safe than on the streets of New Orleans after dark. Venezuala may have a few pirates, we have literally thousands of deadly criminals.

N

Just curious

Has anyone ever compared the number of boats lost through storms, equipment failure, stupidity or whatever, compared to the number of boats taken by pirates.
I would bet the very first beer, that more people loose their boats, and die, due to stupidity, than due to pirates.

J

jviss

Well,

... New Orleans is a special case, a veritable sewer of crime. Hardly representative of the nation as a whole.

N

Nice N Easy

Well, DC

New Orleans is a special place and case. But DC has a higher murder rate the we do down here. And regardless of whether it's a drug dealer or a citizen, when bullets start flying they don't discriminate.

J

jviss

Help is on the way...

... the recent Supreme Court decision should improve things in DC soon. :)

Seriously, I like New Orleans, and I've been there many times. But I wouldn't tie up there, and wouldn't venture out in the dark alone unarmed.

Likewise DC.

I am always reassured when this argument comes up.

This always makes me feel secure and safe in the good old US of A. Since I live in NY City I just love the fact that some A-hole can go to your good old boy state like Virginia or Carolinas and buy a bunch of hand guns to bring back and sell to young men in gangs in places like Baltimore (highest murder rate?) and my own backyard of Brooklyn or Da Bronx. I always feel safer knowing that the gang-banger who pisses me off on our highways probably is carrying and wants to shoot me and my car for giving him the finger for cutting me off. I have been lucky that the one guy I pissed off in recent memory only threw his half empty McDonalds soda cup at my car.
Do you good old boys still hunt for your food? Do you need handguns because Billy-Bob owns a treasure trove of arms and gets real drunk every now and then? I know this is how it is though as do the local constabularies. I can understand if you like to hunt for fun and food why you should be allowed to have a rifle but WTF is wrong with this picture?
If you really want to fire guns and ammo at people that much shouldn't you just join the Army, Navy or whatever branch of the service allows you to do so? Why do you need protection from your neighbors at home? And WTF bring your guns to a foreign county? Places like the UK have a much more sensible approach to guns and there is a lot more brawling/fighting then actual fatalities due to gun usage per capita.
Just because you can does not mean that you should.
I am all for bare arms but crazy people bearing arms is just stupid IMHO. I don't want to take your precious guns and ammo from you I just really resent the fact that they often end up in teenagers hands in our inner cities. You McCoys and Hatfields can shoot it out in the boonies as far as I am concerned. At least peace officers (police) and service people are trained to use them and secure them but the public is not?
My pardon jviss if you are well acquainted with how to keep your arms safe but you sound as if you want to carry them anywhere you like as you can in the good old US of A. Your guns are not welcome in as many places as you are.
Good luck.
