I live aboard my '85 C30, so I have a TV/VCR onboard. Right now it is on my chart table. Has anyone built the TV into the boat? I know there isn't much room to do this, but I figure someone has probably tried it. It would be nice to free up the chart table and also not worry about moving it when I sail. Just curious.

Mounts

There are several stores that will sell TV mounts which bolt onto a wall or a ceiling - similar to the type you see in a school, hospital, etc. They tend to be EXTREMELY overpriced, however. I would check out machine shops/electrical shops. They might be cheaper there. You could also just check out the ones Radio Shack sells, and pretty much make one yourself. Good Luck! Rob

TV

Hi Chip: We have a 1996 C30 MKIII. There is a hanging locker and storage drawers across from the door to the head. We have a 13" RCA color TV on that shelf, which works out quite well. It also runs off of 12 volt, so I wired a 12V outlet there, which also powers the VCR and the CD player. The TV is visble from the galley, and both port and starboard settees. TV

Hi Chip Check out http://community.webtv.net/Jonathan_pa/TheCatalina30 Follow the pictures link and you will see a picture of my set up. When I am under way, I swivel the set to face the bulkhead and bungy it to the fiddle railing. We can usually get under way in fifteen minutes or less. I use Web TV onboard. The main unit is located behind the setee and the web eye is mounted with velcro near the roof. Web TV allows me to surf the web using an infrared key board and my total investment in the unit is less than $200. This year I just added an antenna on the mast which works well. Also There is a deck plate which supplies cable TV (My home marina provides cable at the dock.) The mount that I used can be purchased at any Home Depot for about $40. I bolted it directly to the bulkhead and have never had a problem. I hid not use the bolts supplied with the mount, I used SS bolts that were the largest size that would work and I reinforced the back (inside the head) with several oversized washers. It has been that way for over two years now without any problems. I have taken the boat out countless times on the Chessapeake Bay as well as on the coastal Atlantic without any problems. One side note though, I used those little sticky things that you see in West Marine that supposedly will hold the TV set in place even if inverted, they don't work. Use nylon webbing and two buckles, I think that it's more secure that way. Good luck. Sail. Have fun. Laugh. (if you need help on the last one watch "Captain Ron".) Starkeeper

Perm TV location

I have a 75 Catalina 30 with the TV mounted on the shelf just aft of the chart table. The fiddle was cut and a plywood shelf just the size of the TV footprint bolted to the molded fiberglass shelf base. I added a nylon strap. I several light air sails it hasn't moved. I can lay in the V-berth or either settee and watch TV.
