First time replacing the pencil zinc on my 1985 Cat 30 with a Universal 25 engine. ( I recently purchased it) Looks like zinc is totally gone. West Marine lists pencil zincs by thread diameter. and lookks like they include the bolt and the attached pencil zinc. Can anyone share the info on the proper size West Marine replacement zinc for this engine, or in the alternative provide a reference to a source for the correct replacement zinc? Thanks in advance.

re: pencil zinc for M-25XPB

David" I checked my manual and sure enough it does not tell you the specs for the pencil zinc. Then I went to the westerbeke/universal web site and checked the recommended spares package for the M-25XPB and it say use ZINC 1/4NPT x 1-3/4. See link below. http://www.westerbeke.com/parts/parts_kits_select.cfm?hk=2 Regards, Don

zincs

I picked up several zincs from a Westerbeke/ Universal supply dealer. The zincs actually will screw onto the existing bolt. However, I did have to hack-saw them in half to allow the zinc to fit into the heat exchanger, as the coils inside the exchanger prevent the insertion of the whole zinc.

Zink

The 1985 m-25 has a smaller heat exchanger then the m-25xp.The correct size is 1/8 npt x 2in

It's Not the Engine, It's The HX size

David M25s usually have 2 inch HXs, but some of us have gone modern and replaced them with 3 inch HXs. The 2 inch HX pencil zinc is an 00. The 3 inch HX is larger, I just installed it and have to go buy new zincs. I have the first 3 month zinc sitting here in my study. The thread's 5/8 inch dia. with a 3/4 nut head. Depends on what HX you have. Stu PS change 'em every 3 months here in SF, never have a problem. Don't go longer than 3 months or it'll decompose too much in the HX. Also, just buy the whole thing, don't bother reusing the bolt head with new zincs. It's all of a buck or two apiece for g'ness sakes!

Thanks to all

Thanks for the info on the zincs. One of the best things about owning a Catalina is the willingness of other owners to share their experience and knowledge- sure makes it more efficient than trial and error.

Final word on sizing

FYI- the Westerbeke spare parts list for the M-25XP, M-25, and 5421 lists the same pencil zinc- 3/8 NPT x 1 1/4.

RE: zincs

I don't remember the correct size, but I do remember that I've have to cut about 3/4" off the end of the zincs I have purchased. Take the bolt head with you to get the correct size, then trim the end as necessary to get the correct fit. Here in the Chesapeake mine last a season, maybe less use than Stu's, maybe less salinity.

Once

Dave,the m-25 with the 2in heatexchanger ( 1986 and older)have a 1/8 npt x 1 3/4". in 1987 the mp25xp came out with a 3in hx with a 3/8npt zink. I just changed mine on my "86" m-25 with 2in hx,it took the 1/8npt zink.
