Peggy, hose odor ?

Peggy, I recently bought a 1984 Hunter 40. The boat has sat in the yard for approximately 2 years. I also got a copy of you book on head odors from the Hunter Rendezvous at Solomons. I was not there, but I my friends said they really enjoyed your presentation. There is a strange odor that I think is coming from the hoses based on your description. The odor does not really smell like what I would identify with a sewer. It is, however, obvious and unwanted. It seems to be strongest in the area between the bulkheads separating the chart table from the aft head. When I remove the hatch to the left of the chart table, the odor is stronger in that area. That also appears to be where some of the hoses are located. 1. Can you offer any insight to help confirm (or refute) my suspicion? If the problem is hoses: 2. What type of hose do you recommend? (I have seen prices from $2 to $6 per foot.) 3. What is the easiest way to replace these hoses? If you do not think the problem is hoses: 2. What should I try first? Thanks! Craig

Easy to confirm or not

Follow the instructions in the book for testing hoses for odor permeation. If the hoses pass the test, clean the bilges and the sumps. The ONLY hose I recommend is SeaLand "OdorSafe" brand hose. Expensive (if you've found it below $7/ft, that's a VERY good price), but the only hose that really is "bullet proof"...so which is really more expensive--$6-8/ft once, or $2-3/ft every few years...not to mention the agony of the labor involved. As for how to replace hoses, follow the directions in the chapter "Replacing Hoses." The chapter "Installing a Head and Holding Tank" also includes some useful tips for replacing hoses. Btw...as long as you have to do all this, now would be an excellent time to install a Lectra/San (CG Certified Type I MSD that treats waste and flushes overboard). Type I and II MSDs are legal in your waters...pumpout facilities are scarce...and a 40' boat certainly should have the power resources to support it. Check it out on the Raritan website at http://www.raritaneng.com Go to "waste treatment" from the homepage.
