Pedestal guard installation

If all will refer to that thread, regular guy outlined what he found. It is apparent that his boat had wheel steering installed after market and not at the factory as the factory used the pedestal with a wheel brake (optional or dealer installed) that was mounted to the starboard side of the pedestal vs. thru the wheel.

As for Jim S., he cannot steer too swift. Har Har Har. His better half or mate can steer A ok.

Today I completed the pedestal guard installation, which included lots of wiring. Cable had to be routed through the guard pipe from different locations or devices; switched 12V, running light power, transducers cables, GPS to radio connection, speaker cable, etc.
I have put into a waterproofed box a new Lowrance Elite-5 DSI GPS chartplotter with fishfinder, also a Raymarine St40 bidata speed-, depth- and water temperature instrument, what came with the boat and was never installed but the two thru hull transducers. Also I put a speaker connected to the VHF radio and a digital voltmeter to monitor the state of the batteries. The speaker outside works just great, everything works well as I wanted it. How do access the underside of the pedestal to mount the feet of the guard?

I have never understood the placement of the large access panel in the rear berth. Or I guess I should say why there wasn't access provided to the pedestal underneath. I have had to replace the control cables twice now and it is always a pain.

I am thinking I would just like to have a place to mount the wheel pilot control head. Does anyone make something that just attaches to the pedestal which is not intended for a hand hold? I have not found it yet.

I have also added an inspection hatch just the same way you did. I am wondering know if I should have put the hatch on the top of the hole. I wonder if you have had any water pooling on it . Worried about water damage to the plywood core. I sealed it with epoxy .
P.s. My port pulley on my edson steering was also seized ( low hour boat) wonder how many are out their like that. Would be a nasty failure at an inopportune time.

Also I sealed the cut surface but with 3 layers of varnish and bedded the port with butyl tape. I don't think water will stay on the port, it would have to over-flood the tank locker first.

Wonder on how many boats the steering pulleys are sized and the sailor does not know about it. Maybe that is the reason that the cables often have to be replaced.
My steering runs now so nicely light with the smoothly running pulleys.
