I have gone on line to Rig Rite and identified the mast cross section. The Pearson 303 and Pearson 28-2 use the same ISOMAT mast cross section (H46). I am in the process of looking to by a Pearson 303 to replace my Pearson 28-2 that was totaled by Hurricane Irene. I was spoiled by my Pearson 28-2 with all the lines leading to the cockpit. I am hoping to find and buy a 303 that is laid out the same. According to the original Pearson 303 specs the halyards and reefing lines only were led to the mast and winches were mounted on the mast also. A friend of mine has a 1986 Pearson 303 which as the mast deck collar with turning blocks to faciiliate the lines lead to the cockpit. He does not know if the boat was origially built that way or if it was modified by a previous owner. If all the 303s (1982 through 1986) have the same type of mast deck collar then I could reroute lines if not originally equipped. The bottom line is that: is the 1986 the only year Pearson lead the lines aft on the 303 models.
