Pearson 303 Cutless Bearing Removal

Has anyone replaced their cutless bearing on a 303? Since the shaft does not use a strut this appears to be a little more daunting. There are two set screws that need to be removed, but is it imperative to remove the shaft? I have an engineer friend design something to slide over the shaft from the engine compartment to press out the bearing that way. Are we being overly optimistic?

Any and all advice or critics appreciated. Cheers.

Since no one I replied I went to work on this solo. As it turns out, since my cutless was very worn and falling apart. ;) it came out with a screw driver and a small hammer and I did not need to pull the shaft. Excellent and unexpected turn of events. The new bearing pressed in nicely and snug. Re-did the raw glass and I added two dimples for the set screws. No more play in the shaft. Cheers and fair winds.

Hi Keith! Nice job I must say. I have not taken or removed mine yet! Could you tell me and readers a little on what made you feel it needed to be replaced and some of the details on where you purchased the bearing ( brand name or type used). I plane on doing this but, after I remove my chain-plates and re-bed them. Did you take photo's? while you worked on this. Thanks again StarGazer P303
