Pearson 303 Cutless Bearing Removal

Has anyone replaced their cutless bearing on a 303? Since the shaft does not use a strut this appears to be a little more daunting. There are two set screws that need to be removed, but is it imperative to remove the shaft? I have an engineer friend design something to slide over the shaft from the engine compartment to press out the bearing that way. Are we being overly optimistic?

Since no one I replied I went to work on this solo. As it turns out, since my cutless was very worn and falling apart. it came out with a screw driver and a small hammer and I did not need to pull the shaft. Excellent and unexpected turn of events. The new bearing pressed in nicely and snug. Re-did the raw glass and I added two dimples for the set screws. No more play in the shaft. Cheers and fair winds.

Hi Keith! Nice job I must say. I have not taken or removed mine yet! Could you tell me and readers a little on what made you feel it needed to be replaced and some of the details on where you purchased the bearing ( brand name or type used). I plane on doing this but, after I remove my chain-plates and re-bed them. Did you take photo's? while you worked on this. Thanks again StarGazer P303
