I Wonder

If the setup Rick described would work on a PDA as well.

The answer is....

Peter The actual answer to your software question (or one of the possible answers) is The Capn software package. It was recommended to me and I like it a lot. It ain't cheap, but this is after all a boat we're talkin' about! Ron

Another GPS antenna

I normally prefer not to purchase Microsoft products, since there are many other good products out there, and cheaper too. Anyway, this time, I bought the Microsoft Street + Trips 2005 with GPS antenna. I paid $99 for it at Costco. The software is a road mapping and driving direction software, and it works ok, nothing special. The GPS antenna is a small hockey puck like thing and connects to a USB port, and it also works with any marine charting software that will recognize and work with a USB GPS. The only downside of a PC based configuration is salt water, unless you keep it down in the cabin, and not in the cockpit. Of course, if you have the whole thing in the cabin, then the hockey puck GPS antenna won't be able to see the sky. So if you want a GPS antenna, you can pay a few bucks more and get a street mapping software along with it. By the way, I can never see buying a car with an integrated street mapping GPS. I never get lost driving at my home town. I only get lost when out of town, and usually driving a rental car. That's why I bought it in the 1st place.

GPS down below

J.C. said, "...if you have the whole thing in the cabin, then the hockey puck GPS antenna won't be able to see the sky." I had an experience where the handheld GPS in the cockpit got water in the battery compartment and failed at a most inopportune time with visibility about 50 feet. As a result, I did a lot if experimenting with GPS placement and learned that it works just find down below. I have kept the antenna below on 4 different boats and there seems to be no problem in seeing the satellites. I second the vote for The Cap'n. I have used it for 7 years and haven't found anything I like better yet.

PC Navigation

There are several new programs that can use both Raster, and Vector charts. Rose Point's "Coastal Explorer", and the MapTech copy "Navigator Pro" (MapTech is paying royalties to Rose Point). Rose Point US$400, MapTech $500. They both come with all of NOAA's vector charts (which are free). These do not cover B.C. waters however. If you buy a MapTech Chart Kit you get their Offshore Navigator in a 'Lite' version, which you can navigate with, and it has the charts you just bought. For example I just bought a new Region 15 Pacific Northwest, so all of those charts are in the program. You can upgrade to the full 'Offshore Navigator' for $99, but this program can only use Rastor charts. The Cap'n has a program that can use both, it is 8.0, and costs $430. Fugawi also has a highly regarded program. The NOAA web site gives links to all the software companies. NOAA

PC Navigation Charts

Peter; I didn't give you any information on charts. In case you aren't aware, Rasters come from various sources and are usually in a 'BSB' format that can be used by most nav programs. The BC coast comes in 3 packages, sometimes labeled NDI P1, P2, and P3. They are $250 each here in the US. P1, and P2 cover the BC coast while P3 covers the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Unless you have friends who are willing to "loan" a copy that is a sizable investment. It also seems that your government wants a fee for any electronic chart. Unfortunately NOAA only covers US waters, and doesn't have any Canadian charts at this time.

Dave, I tried to find you in the owner section but you do not seem to be there. I think we have talked in the past, could you email me at svtula at shaw.ca? Your offer of help would be much appreciated. Peter
