Paper gasket

Can someone tell me if there is anything I should use when installing a new paper gasket (lubricant/gasket sealer)? I am replacing the zincs on my Yanmar 2QM20 and the covers didn't have any paper left on them much less zinc. The PO said it had been several years since they were replaced. The zincs were disintegrated. Also, does anyone know what you call the tool used to remove the two hose connections that connect to the cooling water cylinder inlet connection? Once I pull off the hoses the pipes (1/4 or so in diameter) have these groves in them one at 12 one at 3 one at 6 and one at 9 o'clock. It looks as though a screw driver could be used to back them out but it would have to be a big slotted screwdriver. Did I mention the screw cap that holds the zinc in won't budge and this inlet connection turns when I try to unscrew it until these two pipe fittings hit the manifold? This is why I can't back the inlet connection out because these two pipe fittings are getting in the way. Does any of this make sense? Here is a picture I pulled from the internet. Of course a big screw driver would not work because the motor block get in the way! So where do I get a tool to do this job and what is it called?

Part number 124450-11681 for the rear and 124450-44410 for the front if you want to do it the easy way.

I have the same problem with inlet connection. I let it unscrew enough to get a block of wood wedged in, remove the zinc, and then the whole thing tightens up again when I screw the zinc holder/cover back on.

I wouldn't try to take off the pipe nipples on something of this age. If you must, be sure to have a part numbers 104211-49060 (the one that keeps it from turning) and 124223-49300 the one facing aft) on hand.

You should really have service and parts manuals for your engine. They are still available from these folks along with the parts listed:

However, they can't sell to you in FL because of dealer territory restrictions but they might be able to tell you who to buy from. You might also be able to find out with some Google research or talking to your local Yanmar dealer. The dealer can probably get the parts for you also. I've got to order some gaskets myself but you should line up a reliable source in case you need something in a hurry.

Unrelated but I gotta tell you anyway.

I once replaced the paper gasket on the 2GM20 water pump and for good measure added black sealant as well. The effect was to create a miniscule air leak that led the exhaust hose behind the enging to explode in a crescendo of smoke and water and mud. Yanmar mechanic took four hours to puzzle it out. Lesson learned: use gasket or sealant, but not both.
