Lowes Brush Cleaner

You might try the following to remove paint from gel coat. First try the weakest, Lowes "Klean Strip" brand Brush Cleaner. I use this to clean topsides and cockpit gel coat each season, comes out like new. Also try Lacquer Thinner, Acetone or M.E.K. , each being a little stronger than the next. If the Brush Cleaner doesn't do the job, try Acetone. I use it all the time on Gel Coat.

Re: Lowes Brush Cleaner

All of the above solvents will soften gelcoat.

Try Easy-Off oven cleaner. :) I've used it to remove painted on boat names from a gelcoated hull. Of course, if you're planning on doing large areas, you'd be better off getting a fiberglass safe paint stripper.

Is your ultimate goal to repaint? I used Bix Marine Paint and varnish remover available from Home Depot. It worked quickly and didn't harm the gelcoat (as far as I could tell). I did repaint however. I've used this stuff on two boats with great results.

sandsailor, I wonder why it was painted in the first place ? If you're willing to spend lots of time wetsanding with "micro " sandpaper you always have the option to repaint it. heres a boat I had to repaint..I had to use some kind of marine or auto stipping stuff first and I wiped it down with actone before painting to be sure there was no wax or oil left in the fiberglass.I painted this eight years ago and it still looks like this today. its marine handwax no buffer paint. My sailboat has to be buffed and the jelcoat is getting tired from all of the oxidation. You may want to find out what oxidizing will do to your boat if use paint. my sailboat is moored for 6 mo and my powerboat stays in the garage....good luck Smitroe

Both Interlux and Pettit paint companies make paint removers for fiberglass. I have used both and they work. Use according to the instructions.

got a force 5 (O.K. I stole it off craigslist for $25 ) but someone painted it with a spray can and the bottom with a roller. I've patched up the big problems with fiberglass filler but need to remove the paint to see if i missed anything. then theres my 27' santana with 3 yes 3 layers of bottom paint and the anti fouling stuff that will probably come off with a pressure washer (i want this thing like glass when I'm done)...
