It's really suprisingly easy.

Stop this site for step by step instructions.

I did mine last summer in about 20 minutes. In the water and it was no big deal. I've included pictures, which are very similar to the above sites. His are in a steril bench top environment, mine are the real deal.

The white tube is a piece of pvc pipe that I cut to push the flax into the packing nut. Works great.

Good luck!
Chris

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Check out the Mainesail post....follow it and build the tools. I was dreading this project last year and it turned out to be a really easy one. Using an old dry wall screw to remove the old packing is a great idea too!

Like everyone else following Main's advise, I found the job easy except...
I bought 3/16 packing and made up 3 rings using a 1" pipe and it turned out my set up used 1/4 packing and only 2 rings. Go figure:cussing: another trip to West Marine.

I found the toughest part on a MKIII was the stuffing box is directly under the cabinet face where it is virtually impossible to get 2 wrenches on it. I had to use a center punch and hammer to lightly tap the lock nut until it was freed enough to un-tighten by hand. I used PB Blaster for a few days before, just be careful not to get it on any rubber parts. I also used a stainless steel wire brush in a drill to clean the threads.

Good Luck
Bob

Bob, even boats only several apart seem to have different stuffing box configs..Team 118's, which is old like mine is different. Old Skool Neil and I have compared notes and ours are different as well..only 90 hulls apart!
here's mine. - hull #511..Notice I've 'improved' access slightly by cutting out the lip.

As long as you can move the box forward, you're OK. Many boats (too many, in fact) don't have that room. Calder included those "issues" in his Cruising Handbook.
