I just repacked mine this spring and used 3/16" along with a large dad of waterproof grease. If you never did this before, ask someone who did help the first time.
IF the boat is out of the water, the PSS dripless packing is a much more permanent way to go, and you don't get any water in the bilge at all after it is installed. They are easy to install and the cost is not too bad.
Go to the archives and type in packing gland, stuffing box, etc. You will get 100s of hits like the ones listed below.http://archive.sailboatowners.com/archive/archivepview.tpl?sku=1999194115610&forumabr=aao&fno=2http://archive.sailboatowners.com/archive/archivepview.tpl?sku=2000122092906.5&forumabr=bb&fno=3http://archive.sailboatowners.com/archive/archivepview.tpl?sku=2000233075717.36&forumabr=bb&fno=3http://archive.sailboatowners.com/archive/archivepview.tpl?sku=1999194115610&forumabr=aao&fno=2
huntermarine.com, then about us, then FAQ on left hand side, but try link bellow. On my 34 with a 1`inch shaft and brass packing gland, packing size is listed at 3/16. Good luck
