Packing gland nut dimension(s)?

I have a 1988 Catalina 30 MKII (hull no. 5075). Prop shaft is 1 inch. Does anyone out there know the dimensions for both the packing gland nut and the lock hut that secures it? I've attempted to measure them and think the packing nut is 2 inches while the lock nut is 1-7/8. Does someone know for sure? I'd like to get fixed wrenches for the nuts as I don't like the adjustable packing gland wrench I've been using.Regards,Gary KunkelCatalina 30 "Folie a Deux"Channel Islands Harbor, CA

I use two honking big Channel Locks

I don't know the dimensions for these two nuts, but 1: they were both the same size (on my '87 C-30) 2: I bought two honking big channel locks from Menards (generic, not name brand), and they work fine. I can then use these two pairs of enormous pliers to beat other things on the boat into submission as required.SteveAlchemistC-30T #4764C-320 #909

Scott: I use 3/15 inch PTFE packing that I coat with PTFE grease. Good results.Steve: I actually use channel locks for the lock nut and that adjustable wrench for the packing gland nut itself. Just looking for the right tool for the job. I do admit, it's always great beating stuff into submission with a "honking big wrench" though.Still looking for anyone who knows the size of the packing gland nut and the lock nut.

I bought a pair of these last year from WM and find them great specialty tools. Not going to damage the nuts by using these. See the link

For some reaason, the link didn't work. West Marine calls it an "Adjustable Packing Nut Wrench" It is on page 329 of their main catalogue.

Has anyone seen this months issue of Mainsheet. There is an ad for a nice set of packing nut wrenches. I will not ruin the suprise, but go to the web address and check out the cost. They look great, but not at that price.

Actually, that's the kind of wrench(es) I'm looking for. I've seen the web page and they are expensive. Even so, if I could be sure they'd fit, I'd consider them. At least the manufacturer says I can try 'em and send them back if they don't do the job.Regards,Gary

packing Nut Wrench

Gary: Go to Home Depot in the pipe section and check out the adjustable nut wrench they sell. It almost looks like the same thing West Marine sells but it is half the cost.
