We have p26 1974 with a topping lift no boom vang we can't seem to catch slot of wind in the main . We have looked through books and we took sailing lessons but have not found what we should do with topping lift - is it disconnected while under sail ? And should we install a boom vang?

Just leave the topping lift hanging and let it swing in the breeze. What I have done on my 75 P26W is attach a line thru the eye on the bottom of the wire.
and run at thru a small block attached to the end of the boom. Keep the line long enough so you can cleat it off anywhere forward on the boom. Your going to have to add the cleat. Now what you have is an adjustable topping lift

Hello:

A line drawing I found online shows the Pearson 26 without a vang, which suggests that the designer felt the boat didn't really need one. The vang keeps the boom from rising as it is swung outboard to sail downwind. If you're just daysailing and weekending then I probably wouldn't bother to install one, but if you plan to race or cruise extensively then it may be worth it. Google "boom vang" and you'll see a couple of examples in the search results. Happy sailing.

What a previous owner of Abracadabra did was shorten the topping lift somewhat and add a pair of small fiddle blocks, the top one of which has a built-in clam cleat, to make an adjustable topping lift.
