Hello,

I have determined that the electric heating element in my 1989 Pearson 36 water heater needs to be replaced. To do this, the heater must be removed. I have the new part, but I also have some questions.

- What is the best way to drain the water heater? Should I just release the water gradually from the cold inlet into the bilge and let the bilge pump get rid of it?

- My system heats the water using engine coolant (in addition to the electric element). I need to disconnect this system in order to remove the water heater. What is the best way to go about this? Should I just pull the two hoses from the heater and plug them as quickly as possible?

It would be great to hear from someone who has tackled this job before.

I replaced my water heater 2 years ago. Basically make sure power is off and disconnect electric, turn the water pump off , turn the sink hot water on to release pressure and undo the inlet letting the water go into bilge. I use a shop vac to capture water as it's coming out. Take the engine hoses off from the water heater, then pull out. If your hoses are old take this time to replace them. Also if you have not flushed and changed antifreeze, this may be a perfect time.... And why not replace the thermostat as it doesn't cost much.

Then just replace the tank and hook everything back up. You are going to have to be thorough when attaching the engine cooling hoses as you want all air out of the system otherwise overheating will occur.

I would say if it's the original tank just replace rather than fix as age is a factors and other things will eventually go..... My opinion.

Good luck!
