Ould like to know how much our puthaul should move - 1986 P 28. Right now it is almost nil, maybe an inch or so. I am assuming there is some corrosion in the boom and I will try and work my fingers in there to move stuff around; maybe spray with WD 40 to loosen it up.
Any advice is appreciated and I'd reall like to know how much it should move.
Thanks.

It should move freely, a few inches each side of the black limit line, if your boom has such. Inside there's likely a pulley reduction setup, held in place by one of the through bolts close to the aft end. You can remove the cap, and get at things that way. Just be sure to remember how it comes apart. Once you do, you'll get a clear picture of any tangles or bound lines. Good luck.

These parts are notorious for seezing. I removed and replaced all mine when boat was bought as they would not budge.

Thanks for the scoop. I'll try and get it loose next time out.

You should be able to freely move the outhaul in and out and stretch the sail several inches. If there is no mechanical advantage inside or (not so often) outside of your boom, you might want to have one installed if you are unable to do so yourself, because a block and tackle system always makes the function easier. By pulling the outhaul out, stretching the foot, you will lower the draft in your sail, which is generally wanted for heavier winds. For lighter winds, or for sailing downwind, you usually want to loosen the outhaul, which will bring the draft of the sail up. It is much like the halyard or cunningham on the mainsail. Tighten either one and you will bring the draft of the sail forward and loosen it and you will bring the draft aft.
