I need to repower my Oday 25 with an outboard motor. What shaft size sould I get? most outboards Im finding that are used are short 15" to 20" masde for fishing boats or whatever. But only a few say long shaft. What about reliability should I go new or will a used motor be fine if its in good condition. I'm looking for a 6 to 10 HP for my Oday 25. anyone care to help me out.

Timm R 25 Oday

On our boat

We sail an 1981 25 Oday . We have been using an electric start 7.5 horse two stroke Mercury .this we got used and it has been flawless .I would most certainly for for a long shaft.

A decent used

...outboard is going to be pretty close in price to a new one. Outboards tend to hold onto their value well. Try onlineoutboards.com . Once you go past 6hp the powerhead goes up a size and the weight almost doubles. My last boat was a Columbia 26' MKII that weighed over 6k lbs and a 6 horse worked very well. Also of note, I was happy with the performance even at 6500' of elevation where engines only run at about 70% of their capacity. Whatever you decide, remember that these small outboards come stock with a prop designed to push a small fishing boat of around a thousand lbs. Speak with a prop shop or onlineoutboards.com about a proper prop. Longshaft is a must. Tim

20" is a "long shaft" but.....

It looks like Tohatsu/Nissan (same motor - different color) have a "ultra long shaft" model That is 25". $1400 bucks and change with no tax and free delivery can't be beat. The ultra longshaft would be nice to avoid cavitation in waves. Tim

Oday 25 New London,
Go for Electric Start

Hi Joe; I have an old Evinrude two-cycle 9.9 longshaft on my 76 O'Day 25. With the currents in the Sound, I wouldn't go much smaller. Definetly go for the Electric Start ! With the travel of the new motor mount that you will be adding, it is a long reach to try to pull start it when it's down. It will also re-charge your battery when it's running. Regards, Corey SV Donna Lynn

Do Yourself a Favor...

...Get the long shaft unless you like to cavitate. When I once had to buy one, it was highly recommended.

Outboard for 0Day 25

I spent 15 years trailering a 25 foot sailboat all over the country. That O'Day 25 is a pretty big boat for a 25 and I would go with a 9.9 Yamaha or Honda 4 stroke with electric start and alternator to charge batteries. You can always throttle down for less power in a 9.9 but you can only get so much out of a smaller motor. In a sailboat when you need powere you need it. The Yamnaha 9.9 4 stroke I had had a big 3 blade prop and would really push mine where I wanted to go. Also the 4 stroke is quiet and you will like that when you have to motor any distance. I had Evinrudes and Johnsons until I switched to Yamaha 4 stks. Never looked back. I am sure you could find a used motor but if you can afford one buy a new one. This is a really important part of your boat and a bad motor can ruin your whole day, week, season, boat etc.
