You Need A Longer Shaft!

I mean your engine needs a longer shaft. :) Or, you could lower the mounting bracket on the transom. I have a 25" extra-long shaft motor on my O'Day 25.

We have the same concern

Our motor on our 25ft Hunter sits too high out of the water as well. We have tried various postions on the bracket with no success. Right now we have a "shim" so that the motor sits more vertical and that has helped a little. Our concern with lowering the bracket is that we won't be able to reach the motor to start it!

Long shaft

you using an outboard that has a 15 inch shaft? If you are, then you need to get one that has a 20 inch shaft, if you are using one with a 20 inch shaft, then you need an outboard with a 25 inch shaft.

While we are on this subject what is ideal?

I guess the longest shaft is always ideal. Shafts come in 15 inch,20 inch, ,22.5 inch,25 inch, and the longest shaft 30 inches. I wonder what would be the disadvantage of a 30 inch shaft? Wonder what is called long shaft when there are so many sizes.

Before you replace

your outboard with one with a longer shaft, it may be less expensive to try the following: (1) See if you can remount your OB bracket lower. This presumes that you'll be able to have a stout enough backup behind the board to support the weight of your motor; and that you'll still be able to reach the OB controls from the cockpit. (2) if you cannot relocate your OB bracket to a lower position, it may be possible to buy a new bracket that has a greater range of travel. If you decide to take this route, make sure you know the max travel of the new OB Bracket before buying it -- and that it'll solve your problem. Catalina Direct sells some nice OB brackets, as does Garelick. I had this same problem on an OB powered boat I had years ago and a new bracket not only helped get the lower unit into a more efficient location with the motor down, but the new springs in the bracket were a back saver for me.

longer shaft ob or

a retractable motor mount..... if you like your current outboard or can't afford a new one, relocate the mount or replace it with a retractable model that will allow you vertical options.

I bought a Evinrude Long Shaft ...

...when I had a Catalina 25 and needed one. It worked perfrct. I had looked at a Catalina 25 with a Honda reqular shaft and it was too short.

Long Shaft Envy...lol..

Your problem is actually common in smaller boats.I had a Coronado 25 that had this delema.Too short a shaft and prop would'nt stay in the water ( meant going thru empellers way too fast ) the longer shaft stayed in the water after it was retracted creating drag on the boat and slowing it down. The Coronado's had a small stern locker (closet on ass end for you lanlubbers) that house the moter..good idea that does'nt work very well.I ended up just using long shaft and putting up with the drag. You'll find similiar headaches with brackets..they'll either be too low or not go low enuff..unless you custom mount one to match the motor your going to use..go with a minimum 20"..and watch the look in the eyes of your Nieghbors as they go thru Shaft Length Envy. Seriously, there are no easy answers and what works on one boat may not work on yours..play with it (no pun intended) and find the best solution you can..be sure you seal all old or unused holes with epoxy or some such to protct the Transoms core.
