Before you replace
your outboard with one with a longer shaft, it may be less expensive to try the following: (1) See if you can remount your OB bracket lower. This presumes that you'll be able to have a stout enough backup behind the board to support the weight of your motor; and that you'll still be able to reach the OB controls from the cockpit. (2) if you cannot relocate your OB bracket to a lower position, it may be possible to buy a new bracket that has a greater range of travel. If you decide to take this route, make sure you know the max travel of the new OB Bracket before buying it -- and that it'll solve your problem. Catalina Direct sells some nice OB brackets, as does Garelick. I had this same problem on an OB powered boat I had years ago and a new bracket not only helped get the lower unit into a more efficient location with the motor down, but the new springs in the bracket were a back saver for me.
