I have a 1973 C27 that needs an outboard motor. What recommendations does everyone have for a motor with respect to horsepower and operating controls. Thanks, Andrew Scott C27 #964

---I recommend the new light-weight 4 stroke Tohatsu 9.9hp with RC and Electric. Might go 15hp though. Get a long shaft, 20", and consider a smaller pitched prop, since overall speed is limited by boat design. Offers more power by allowing higher rpms without cavitation. (PLEASE, NO MAXIMUM HULL SPEED COMMENTS!) C27 motor well will not allow most new engines with large powerheads to tilt up without removing the cowling. It was designed for the old Johnson Sailmaster and Evinrude units with lower profiles. Check the new Sailmasters out, but I'm thinking they will be too big also. Someone here mentioned a Yamaha model that may fit. Check the archives, there's a lot written on this. Some folks have modified the well to accommodate the larger profiles, others have closed off the well and installed fixed motor mounts. Simply extending a fixed bracket 6 or 7 inches out may solve the problem. On my boat, I just leave my 9.9 Tohatsu down when sailing. Only put it up when I'm done for the day. I remove the cowling, tilt up the motor and put a heavy canvas cover over it. The unit tilts into the cavity and is protected from the elements. I procrastinated about making the motoer well modification, now I'm used to it. I might try the extended bracket someday, though.
