Outboard Handle Crutch

I was looking for a way to keep the outboard pointing straight ahead when steering with the tiller. A friend recommended making a crutch to hold it. I used a synthetic cutting board as the raw material (they are real cheap at Ikea). It's easy to work with and should weather well. I cut it to a rectangular shape of the proper size and then made a cutout to fit the handle of the outboard. The piece was then secured with two screws to the aft wall of the outboard well. Just lower the handle into place and the outboard stays put. Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy

Great Idea!!!

Ron, great idea on the crutch. Liked what you did with your fans also. I agree with the vibration on those babies. Was looking for an idea on mounting them near the rear berth so that we get some air back there when we're sleeping ;-) Paul H S/V Linda Belle 95 H26

Simple yet impressive and functional!

I love all the ideas that are generated on this forum. Great idea Ron. Yet another winter project to add to my list. Thanks

Cajun tiller tamer

I read in this forum several months ago about a cheap, effective rig called a Cajun Tiller Tamer. Following the directions, I rigged one on my h26. I used about 8 feet of old 5/16, 3 strand line. One end was tied to the stern pulpit just to the port of the ladder. With the tiller in the center position, I rolled three wraps just aft of the hicking stick clamp. I then tied off the other end, using a tauntline hitch, to the starboard side of the pulpit. When is use, I point the tiller in the desired direction, tension the line and, Hands Off! When I dont want it, I push the wraps aft and they go slack and out of the way. If there are steady winds, I can sail hands off for quite a long way. Minor adjustments can be made by twisting the wraps to move the tiller a bit.

What happens when you tilt the motor?

Doesn't the new piece prevent you from tilting the motor out of the water while sailing?

Tilt's fine.

The crutch doesn't interfere with motor tilt in any way. Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy
