I was installing an OB engine bracket on the stern pulpit and the bracket says to use it on a 2 stroke engine only. Why would that be? What difference does it make?
Generally 2 stroke engine is lighter in weight to 4 strokes. So if you determine the weigh of a 4 stroke is non issue than no difference what you put on the obm mount.
the difference is in the torque of a 4 stroke vs. a 2 stroke. If you put a 4 stroke outboard on an outboard bracket made for a 2 stroke, over a (rather short period of time) the torque of the 4 stroke motor will start to damage the 2 stroke bracket.
It is the weight of the engine and its distribution.
2 strokes are lighter for any given HP size and they are usually less top heavy than 4 strokes. Make sure your mount can handle the overall weight and also the torque or lateral forces of the powerhead. The engine clamps protrude above the pulpit rail and can crack if subjected to strong lateral forces either back and forth or side to side depending on where the it is mounted. Stay under the rated limits when using a 4 stroke.
WM has a simple rail mount pad in two versions; one for 2 stroke and one for 4 stroke. The main difference seems to be the size of the pad as well as the weight rating.
