Pulled out the 170 for the year, sad to put it to bed for the winter, but opportunities to get up to the cottage come few and far between this time of year. The leaves are already starting to change up there (northern lower pennisula of Michigan), but this w/e was beautiful! I will still get in a few sails at the local sailing club (interlake 18's). I leave the boat in all season. Last year when I pulled it out, there was just a little green scum on the bottom which was easy to wash off. This year there were about 700 or so zebra mussels stuck to the bottom. Fortunately, they were not too hard to remove - guess I need to take a look at that bottom more often! I am thinking of waxing it before I cover her for the winter. Is it better to wax in the fall or spring? Also, any ideas for storage? I am thinking of getting some rubbermaid type storage boxes to put up in the bow. What have some of you tried?

So Sad

David, That's too bad. I too have to start thinking about pulling her out in a week or so. I will wax mine this fall before storing, and probably again in the spring. If anything gets on it during storage, it will be easier to get off later if it's waxed. At least that's been my experience. Of course waxing in the spring is just because I want her to look her best. What are you planning to put in the totes, and is it just for winter storage? I was thinking that anything that could have absorbed moisture probably would be better stored where it could breathe and dry out completely over the winter. It's too bad the season is ending for a few of us. Did anyone else go to the Cedar Point Boat Show? They had sailboat rides on a 41 ft. Hunter. I got to take the helm for about 10-15 minutes. Too cool! I imagine others got the chance too. I hope so anyway, because it was a blast. I might need a bigger boat now. JerryA

Out for the season

I also pulled my boat this weekend. I don't paint the bottom and found that Slimy Grimy does an amazing job getting rid of the scum. Of course I give it a quick scrub with a brush before pulling the boat -- this gets the worst of the stuff off. The bottom always looks factory fresh. Give it a try. I wax in the spring. I invite a few friends over and we get it done in a couple of hours. The more beer the longer it takes....

What wax?

Which wax are you using on your 170's? And how deep a scratch or gouge do you decide to do more than just wax over it? I too may be pulling mine soon - alas, not a good sailing season here - btw crummy weather and other things to do... :( Well, still not complaining - got out some, had some fun.

tote

I was thinking of getting totes to store misc stuff that I keep up in the bow such as life jackets/cushions, spare lines, dismantled emergency oars, cup holders and other necessities. I thought a tote would help keep it neater up there and would make emptying the boat easier at the end of the season. I think one or two totes would easily hold it all and if I ever need to get up to the bow when out on the water, it would be nice to just lift two boxes out of the way rather than a bunch of junk. Thanks for the wax recommendations.

Have a good November

Have a good November Loose, I usually don't take mine out until Mid to late October (Here in Michigan). There are many days in October when the conditions are perfect for sailing - it can be pretty brutal if you capsize, or as I once did - just plain fall out of the boat !! (it's a long story). This is actually the first season since I have owned a sailboat that I feel like I have not been out enough. It has been a house project - yard project - work project kind of summer. But I did have a glorious week in the Grand Traverse Bay, which is more sailing than I had done in all of my first 35 years of life put together, so no complaints. Have any of you fellow northern folks every hauled your boat to Florida or Texas or something for some winter sailing?? I have not, but it seems like it might be a trip to plan. Here's hoping I get the boat wet sometime soon. . . John
