I'd like to open up the transom for easier access to the dinghy but the ladder gets in the way, esp when the dinghy is up on the davits. Anyone have a good alternative to replace the oem ladder with a folding one which fits the dimensions of the existing hinges? (H 40.5) thanks

Windline Slide Mount Telescoping Ladder

Our 420 was factory equipped with a Windline (Lewmar Company) folding ladder. You can see a picture at the link provided... http://www.boatersoutlet.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1733 It pulls our from the swim platform and swings down into the water and extends out 2 or 3 ladder steps. Might work for you. Good Luck, Bill

I've only done it (paint) once - it depends on where in the yard it sits when hauled and we generally don't haul for winter. If I were going to haul every year, I'd be inclined to do it your way but the white paint serves as a good indicator color for the first coat of ablative to see when I get breakthrough on the top black coat of paint. The pic was taken last year when hauled as I needed to repaint, install another thruhull and also repack all the seacocks. Hope to get other ideas as these folding ladders typically don't fit - I may try something like quick release pins on the base bracket for easier access

"Repack the seacocks" - What is this?

Can you explain this? If this somehow lubes the seacocks and makes them easy to turn, I am all ears.....

Two options

What I was referring to was taking them apart (yes, I am anal), cleaning and re-assembling them after lubricating with the thick teflon grease. Usually all I do annually is squirt some waterproof grease in and turn them a few times which seems to work fine except mine were getting a bit harder to turn despite my routine weekly opening/closing at beginning and end of each trip or weekend. (except the one under the sink - the PITA one!)

One Option

...which may be the one you are considering is to cut, sleave and fast-pin near the hinge. I saw this on a Catalina, and it worked well. RD

Side Ladder

Ever consider boarding from the side of your boat instead of the stern? I like it much better. Grasp onto the shrouds instead of the rails when getting on and off.
