Rick, why do you have to use IE to connect to wifi???

You shouldn't even have to have a browser open to connect. And once you are connected, your modem doesn't care which browser you use. I've never used IE...always used Netscape (which was developed by Mozilla, who sold it to AOL and then developed Firefox)...never had any trouble connecting to any wifi anywhere, even on my previous old laptop that had only 96 RAM and needed a PCAMIA wireless card. My new one has a built-in card that automatically finds the nearest hotspots and connects--also automatically--to the one I select. All BEFORE I ever bring up Firefox or Thunderbird. Registry Mechanic should speed your computer up a lot, btw. It gets rid of all the trash in your registry the computer has to sort through to figure out what still works...I run it almost daily. Cleaning out your browser's cache at least once a week, a good anti-spyware program that runs automatically and running disc cleanup (accessories/system tools in XP) every week or so will make a huge difference too. Thanks for the kind words, r.w. You might want to spend some time on Kim Komando's website...she knows even more about computers than I know about marine toilets! And she "tells it like it is" too. You can't go wrong following her recommendations.

To uninstall IE 7

Simply go to "Start" "settings" "Control panel" "Add or remove programs". IE7 will be in the list of programs, remove it and you will be back to IE 6. I agree, I didn't care for IE 7 either. I have several internal intranet pages I need to go to to control several network devices via an IP address. IE 7 screwed them up.

...and it didn't come up on Firefox. However, now that you mention it, I'll bet it would if I just pasted in the URL for the logon page. I'll try it, alto I'm still going to toss 7.0 intil there is a 7.X. I have used the same spyware you do and am happy with it. When Norton goes again, I'll try the anti-virus you use. I also hate having Norton crash and having to reload it which seems to happen with the laptop principally. Rick D.

Menu toolbar...

Ed, Another method to turn on the menu bar is to right-mouse-click in the grey area at the top of the window, to the right side of the tabs, and select the 'Menu Bar' option.

I too agree with FireFox...

IE7 was not recommended by my company. They still use IE6, but support FireFox. So that is what I have been using. I really like the add-ons that FireFox supports. The biggest being Cookie Safe which blocks all cookies except those I authorize. I still do have an issue with FireFox and this site. If I type something in the "Write now" box and then use the green "back page" key, the data is gone when I use the "forward page" key. It does not do that on IE. Anyone using FireFox have any suggestions?

Wow, what happened to sailing?

Computers! That's what! OK, R.W. now I know why we don't see you very much anymore. You're stripping your machine of it's identity (cookies) and history everyday. Don't do that! It'll take forever to reload information that would otherwise be stored in your temporary files. I have to do NOTHING when I visit this site. It knows who I am. No log-ins. When I have a problem with new stuff, tech support has a standard-fix; delete my cookies and history. A few months ago (the last time) I flat refused. It's never fixed anything anyway and just slows down my browsing. Damn the torpedoes! But some of these suggestions are great! I'm off to look at that registry program. One thing first; Nobody is mentioning their operating system when they talk about crashes. XP! Life is good. Oh, and no matter what I do with IE7, my tool bar will NOT turn on. Weird.

Fred's menu bar...

Fred, I seem to recall one time when I turned on the menu bar and had a hard time finding it. It was there, but only a little sliver was showing up all the way on the right side of the window. It was moved over so far to the right that none of the icons were showing- just the vertical seperator bar.

Brian, there a couple of solutions...

Neither are great, but they both work: Plan A: when a thread has gotten long enough that you need to bounce back and forth between a post and your reply instead of just scrolling up and down, load Firefox again (you can have two--or even more--browsers up at once) and go to the thread and switch between 'em. Plan B: Edit/copy what you've written before you hit the back button, then just edit/paste it in again when you come back. The biggest problem I have with Firefox is that it will NOT keep my cookie--or anyone else's, so it's nothing I'm doing or not doing--on the CSBB. I don't have a problems with it dumping the cookies I want to keep anywhere else, just there. Fred, all that stuff in your temporary internet files includes spyware and a whole bunch of cookies you DON'T want...it should be cleaned out at least weekly. And btw, deleting those files does NOT delete cookies. You can either go into the cookie file in IE every few days and delete the junk that's been planted on 'em...or, switch to Firefox and download their CookieSafe add on.

Ruedi Rules!

Thank You, Thank You! It took me all of 20 seconds to get rid of that IE7 piece of crap and my PC automatically resorted back to IE6 like you said it would. Fanatastic! Suggest everyone do this...

Fred, Thanks for your inquiry.

Like Peggie said, I dump stuff often, it does not affect speed nor time. Infact, after a full cleanout (for Peggie it would a pumpout) my machine is faster and to sign in again takes less time than waiting for some of the functions to work. I have noticed that your voice is less frequent also. I am observing and waiting for the posts that drop through the cracks. The competition to be correct is more than I have time for. Some of it is really good and some it it is just "I am smarter than the other guy" type of stuff. Moody just posted an impressive and pretty complete post on lift. I thought that was very good. Fred I hope you are doing well with the weather that I saw go through your area. Ya, I was thinking about your welfare! r.w.landau

r.w. if your machine hasn't slowed, perhaps you

don't visit the same type of sites I do. On-line banking, news feeds and sites that take time to sign-in if your cookies are off. I DON'T KNOW. But the rest of your post,,,, well,, I'm not sure I know what you're referring too. "I have noticed that your voice is less frequent also. I've tried to move that bar as far as it will go, left and right, with no sign of the text menu.

Peggie,

I bought registry mechanic. It said it found lots of errors and fixed them. I've been going through my control panel trying to delete latent/dead stuff. It's still there and won't leave, even after running the 'mechanic'. Can't tell that anything is different or faster. Hmmm. Wonder if they have a money back guarantee? Oh-oh, they're off-shore.

wade in

Don’t know why I want to wade into the computer quagmire. For a good computer cleaner to get rid of the excess try CCleaner. The price is right – free – and it takes care of all the overburden added on by just running on the internet. As far a browsers it’s more personal preference than what works well. They all work well, I use IE7, Firefox and Opera.

Thanks Peggy...

That is what I have been doing. I was hoping for a 'fix'. No big deal.

Fred. Registry Mechanic only fixes registry

problems, it's not a hard disc cleaner. And PC Tools is a highly respected company that has offices here in the US. Running Disc Cleanup (all programs/accessories/system tools/disc cleanup) will get rid of a lot of the rest of the unwanted garbage that's left after you uninstall stuff using control panel. You can also tell it to uninstall programs you never use. Then go to Windows Explorer (NOT internet explorer), also found under accessories, and scroll through your directories and manually delete what's left. Be careful to manually delete ONLY those files that ask if you really want to sent it to the recycle bin, don't delete any that warn you that deleting it may cause something not to run. Then run registry mechanic again to get rid of disconnected registry files left. Clean out your browse cache at least once a week too...and get a good antispyware program that runs automatically. Computers, like boats, require SOME hands on maintenance to run well...and at least a little understanding of what maintenance software is intended to do.

Oow, Peggie

The greatest danger we all face when posting on line is talking-down to someone. Thanks, but YOU JUST DID IT. I know and do all that stuff. The old left over Norton files are still in my registry and WON'T LEAVE.

Didn't mean to talk down to you, Fred...

If you still have Norton files in your registry, they're shared by another program that needs 'em. If Norton came preloaded on your computer, it was prob'ly integrated somehow into the computer mfr's proprietary version of XP. I've just recovered from a weird problem: my keyboard failed...and when it did, I not only couldn't type, but various keys sent wrong signals to the computer that caused MAJOR problems. After HP replaced the keyboard, I spent hours on the phone with their techs...finally had to uninstall and reinstall XP to cure 'em.
