And this differs from plywood HOW? Plastic is fine but why choose plywood over solid wood?

Marine quality plywood with an epoxy coating on the underside and edges. Then you can use one of the synthetic wood finish. This is the wave of the future. Who the hell wants to finish wood floors? Maybe Ross, but not me!

My thought was that so many people seem to love their teak and holly cabin soles and desire to replace them why not use solid lumber. Can be sanded many times, is tough, durable, absolutely can't delaminate, can be replaced one strip at a time if needed. I think that FRP is great for hulls and decks but I like wooden interiors.
i did mine with bamboo and a couple of weeks ago blew a cocpit drain and filled the bilge with rain water so my bamboo took it hard due to the verticle grain so i'm thinking back to the oem marine ply with the plasteak over it
I looked a little closer ay my floor. There is 1/4" teak and holly that is currently laid over what appears to be 3/4" marine plywood. The plywood looks to be in decent shape.
A 4x8 sheet of 1/4" teak and holly is about $200 from world panel. I will carefully cut out the teak flooring that is in place with a sabre saw, use the old teak flooring as a template and lay new teak over the top of the 3/4" marine plywood. I like the idea that someone suggested to use teak strips as trim pieces around the edge of the cabinetry.

Please let us know how you control the depth of your cut and how you get very close to the edges.

I am an admirer of bamboo. I use a piece for my whisker pole. It makes beautiful floors. And as you say it is very hard and also very strong. Left outside it lasts longer than tulip poplar but not as long as red oak. I love it for garden stakes because it rots off at the ground and I can just rake it up with the dead tomato plants.
I believe that it is classified as a woody stemmed member of the grass family.

Ross, I would be concerned with expansion and contraction of the solid wood sole in the marine environment. I take it that this hasn't been and issue for you and I'm sure you've given it some thought. Do you have any special tips fr dealing with this?

Some species are less prone to movement after they are dry. I used black walnut for that reason. If you work with wood then you learn to choose the species for the application.
