Coming back to the dock after sailing has been a pain this year. The wind has invariably been blowing straight at the dock. My boat doesent sail well at all under jib alone and the main wont swing far enough to spill the air before I'm past the dock [not much room]. As you can imagine I'm coming in pretty hot. I don't carry an outboad moter. Today I tried something different, I tied a 5 gallen bucket to a piece of line and then to a stern clete. I filled the bucket with water and when it was time to slow down I dumped it off the stern, it really worked to slow me down. I guess depending on the wind I'll either have a one or two bucket day.

Very creative!! What about a bridle? Drogue anchor? In this situation I'd use a bridle. SC

2 Buckets

If 1 did good a good job try 2 and so easy and chip and so easy to use, also how about a boat hook with a line to grab a cleat on dock, get creative as you seem already doing.
Be careful you don't tangle on the prop.

Have you tried sheeting the main in all the way when you get near the dock? This way, the main will drive very little and you might be able to "coast" in. I have never tried this as the situation occurs very seldom with me but have thought it thru and I think it will work. Also, I have a fender clipped to the chainplate and I have crashed the fender against the dock to bleed speed. This works well if you are careful to munch the fender only.
