Yes a beautiful sailing area. The perils of getting caught on a Lee Shore are punishing. Sure glad he made it safely home. Sad he had to abandon his boat.

Clay, any info on it's removal or the removal of contaminates before winter shuts down access?
The guy to took all of the non-USCG pics is a friend of mine who has retired in the area and spends his days fishing for Lake Trout in these waters on his 38 foot trawler. He hates the notion of that boat breaking up a scattering shards of fiberglass everywhere. He has formally asked the USCG for permission to dismantle (AKA chainsaw) it and take it away on a barge.

Sounds like a reasonable request... The liability hazardous waste costs might be ugly.

The day after the incident, the USCG ordered that all liquids be removed from the boat ASAP if there was not going to be an immediate recovery of the boat. So the owner paid Black Hawk Marine to transit 120nm of open lake and go to the boat and pump out all the diesel, oil, antifreeze, and waste.

But if it's a scattered pile of fiberglass shards next year, that gonna be spendy.

Suspect that is why the insurance premium is so high.. Big Liability risk for all boat owners who make such a mistake.

Do not know for sure. But hard to imagine a professional clean-up effort that would have left all that debris behind.
