I am refurbing a P26 and have fabricted a rudder that I'm pretty confident will work but I would sure like to test it out real good before I invest $1000 in sails.
Problem is I don't have any sails at all so I thouhght I'd put a line out to the group to see if anyone had some old junk sails laying around in there garage or boathouse...
I'm not looking to take it out in the open water (gulf) she is in a medium sized lake now while she's being worked on...

Thanks,

Just curious Shep...how did you go about fabricating the rudder. I too got a P26 last year without a rudder. The seller had begun modification of a salvaged rudder from a Catalina..a completely different style of rudder. I finished it, hung it and have sailed quite a lot with it. I don't have any idea how it compares to an original P26 rudder though. You might get someone to tow you at 6 or 7 knots and play with it to see what kind of response you get. I don't know...?

Ruddy at D&R Marine would be able to help you with questions about the original P26 rudder. I spoke with him a couple times when buying parts for my Oday 25. He is very knowledgeable about both Oday and Pearsons. He is also very helpful. It is better to call him than email.

Here is the link for the Pearson 26 at D&R Marine's website.

We got the dimensions from a Pearson Website..
I think it was Dan's Pyxis site...
I'm still working on the shaft, the rudder itself is made of 1" laminated wood (sim to butcher block) w/ Oak strips for horizontal reinforcing....And the whole thing glassed and epoxied...
I'm having some trouble with the shaft..All I have of the origional is about 20" and the knuckle at the top that the tiller attaches to...
I've looked at welding another alum, pipe and extending it with some (wings) that would bolt to the rudder...
Recently I have been kicking around the idea have using laminated oak and having it "turned" at the top 24" and bolted to the rudder...

Either way it will be rigorously tested before I try to sail with it....

Is the Catalina rudder the same shape as the Pearson??
THe shape is what is giving me the most trouble..
If I could make it less wide it would be much easier to reinforce..

A rudder from a comparable Catalina (I am thinking 25') is not shaped at all like a Pearson 26 rudder. It's also hung differently. In fact, the only rudder I've seen that looks anything like the P26 is the P30. These two Pearson rudders are swept way back.

Have you considered kicking around a few boatyards to see if there might be another P26 growing mold that you could salvage parts from? There are plenty of them around.
