I am buying a Cat 28 (1990) and the oil leaked out over the winter and drained into the bilge. Complet4ely the engine is dry! I can't find upon a quick inspection the source of the leak, being that it all drained without the engine running, I assume it is from the pan or other low place on the engine. Does anyone have any idea? The engine has 128 hours on it. Plese help..Thanks Shelby Scott

Is there a drain line attached to the bottom of the oil pan?

If so it may have a leak in it. Replacing that drain line could possibly fix the problem. good luck.

no drain hose...

Thanks for the quick idea, but unfortunately that does not solve the dilemma. There is not a drain hose, but it has dripped out of the aft section of the pan or from the joint where the transmission attaches to the engine? Does that help??

Rear Seal

A leak from that area is normally the rear seal. Not an expensive part, but will probably have to pull the engine and a few hours labor to replace. If you are still in the negotiation stage, I'd have the owners repair it. Wouldn't buy it with out running the engine.

Thank you very much...

Is this beyond the ability of a normal guy (meaning me)? In short do I need any specialized tools? I really appreciate your kindness and support in responding to my question. Thank you. Shelby Scott
