At the shaft coupling (front of the transmission) on my 3JH2E I some oil leak.
Question: do I have to pull the engine and take the transmission out to change the seal?

No

I would think you could remove the coupling and be able to pull the tranny rear seal with a pick and install a new seal.

I agree, Nick, IF he has about 3" of space where he can slide the prop shaft away from the transmission so the coupling can come off the transmission shaft. Lots of boats don't have enough "slide" in the prop shaft to do that.. One possible approach would be to loosen all the engine mounts and carefully jack the rear of the tranny up until the coupling half can be removed .. Going to be a tight job! .. Another approach might be to remove the transmission after jacking the rear of the engine to get enough rear space to slide the tranny free of the flywheel dampner.

Both Nick and Kloudie's point are good but before tackling the job, are you absolutely sure it's coming from the transmission ? If so the oil you pick up should be fairly clean. Using a clean paper towel, wipe whatever you find under the tranny. If black and dirty, then it's coming from the engine. The plate on the tranny will tell you what transmission you have. The KM tranny uses grade 30 engine oil and the KBW uses transmission oil (I believe ATF dextron type). The other suggestion I'd make is to get the manual and see if you can indeed remove the seal from the outside. Don't know about the KBW, but on the KM if I'm not mistaken, the oil seal is press-fitted inside the housing and removing with the output shaft still in place might proove to be very difficult. Attached is an excerpt from the KM manual showing why it might be so. Good luck

leak

Easy to see just check the oil dip stick in tranny and sure you must have already done that but if the tranny is oil OK than check engine and you must have already done all this.

Re: leak

Thank you guys...I have to "monitor" the leak while the tranny is gear and see where the oil is coming from.
Cheers, Gabor
