Oil Filter Change Idea - Comments?

I just finished changing the oil and filter on my '81 C-30 5411. As usual I made a mess of changing the filter even though I used a zip lock bag and heavy duty paper shop towels to soak up the leakage. Anyway, here's my idea for next time: 1. Punch a hole in the top-facing side of the filter. 2. Empty the filter from the hole with my vacuum-type oil changer, or 3. Alternatively turn the filter until the hole faces down and drain the filter oil into a basin (may need another hole for a vent). 4. Tape the hole(s) shut. 5. Remove the filter. 6. No mess -- I hope. Since I won't have a chance to try this until next season, I'd be interestd in any experience or comments. Maybe someone will try it out for me. By the way, I've owned a couple of vacuum oil changers and my current one, a Tempo "Oil Boy" Fluid Extractor ($55 from West Marine) is extremely well made and has an added advantage of being made from heavy-duty, transluscent plastic so you can see the oil level in the receptacle. It reminds me of a piece of lab equipment it's made so well.

nice idea...make sure that the half-turn does not

cause the filter to leak around the gasket, creating another leak to deal with. Can't remember on my M18 if the oil starts to run out after a half turn of the filter.

Half Turn OK

When I changed mine last Saturday (before I had this idea) I noticed that the filter didn't start to leak until at least 3/4 or a full turn. I'm thinking that the drain through the hole idea (with a 2nd vent hole on the other side) is going to be the best since the innards of the filter might interfere with the suction tube.
