I haven't changed the oil and filter myself and the Marina wants $325.00 to do it. Now I'm interested in doing it myself. Any suggestions on a good method? Are there any there special tools required? What kind of pump and fittings do you need? What about the transmission? Thanks for you help. Jerry Snell

Let's see......

Jerry: Let see, you buy me a cheap plane ticket to Chicago from Reno ($270), Oil ($6), Filter ($10), Vacuum Pump ($40), case of good beer $25) Total ($351). I'll show you how to do it yourself. Next year you will have to only spend $16 for the oil and filter. Now you are about $283 ahead of the deal. WOW, that is a lot of money of an oil change. I really hope they are doing a complete engine service including fuel filters, belts etc. Actully the Big Boy Topside is a decent vacuum pump. It has the hoses to run down your dipstick hole. You may also want to get a special filter wrench. These have a strap that will wrap around the filter and make removing it much easier. Get yourself an OEM oil filter and a filter wrench. You need to start the engine and run it in gear at the dock for 10-15 minutes to get the oil warmed up. If the oil is NOT warm the suction pumps have a very difficult time sucking it out of the pan. Remove and replace the oil filter, suck the oil out of the pan refill with clean oil, check for leaks and you are ready to go. Similar process for the transmission. Be sure to use the corrrect oil in the trannie and the engine and you will be an happy sailor. With the money left over for a very nice dinner at your favorite restaurant. If you have any reservations, purchase a manual on the engine that has these steps outlined. Also don't be afraid to ask someone in the marina for help. Good luck

WOW!

And I was bitchin' that the yard was going to charge me $85.00! Like Steve said, it's pretty straight forward. Can't stress warming up the engine enough. Not only does it make the oil easier to pump out, it also causes particulates in the oil, which are normally settled in the pan, to become suspended and removed. Took me all of about 20 minutes to change my oil and filter. Used a Fram filter and Mobil 1 synthetic for diesels. Cheers, Bob Linkage to my boat pics below

Marina owners are decended from pirates....

Unless I am totally missing something, that charge is completely out-to-lunch. Maybe the marina really *doesn't* want to do that type of work?
