I have a barlow winch that does'nt seem to work...anyone have any suggestions on how to fix-or who might be able to fix?

Have you opened it up to see what might be wrong? There's very little that can go wrong with them, usually a broken spring, worn out pawls, or grease gone bad. My guess is that on a boat of your size, it's a single speed winch which makes it even easier to fix.
Here's a little tip, take a shoebox and cut a hole in the bottom that just fits over the winch. Slip the box over the winch BEFORE you start taking it apart so if anything wants to jump ship, the box will catch it.

Thanks Rich. I haven't had my winches apart in years. I probably forgot how to take them apart.
The shoe box idea is a great idea. I'll remember that.

On the single speed winches the springs in the barlow can be replaced by the springs in the Lewmar repair kit available from west marine. They also sell a handy book on how to service winches.
Better than the box idea is remove the bolts under the gunnells and take winch apart on large table at home. The parts are very small and will fly.
The booket recommends cleaning and servicing winches yearly. If anyone knows how to get springs for the Barlow or Barient winches I would like to know where.
I have been told the company that bought those two brands is located in Austrailia. While it claims to sell parts apparently takes many months to get what they do have.
The stainless steel springs could be made in any machine shop that makes springs, but where is a small machine shop that would make you a couple of dozen?
Anybody have a coiled spring catalog?

My O'Day 23 is equipped with Lewmar #6's. I had no experience, but found a step by step on the internet to follow. The shoebox tip works!! Servicing winches is not complicated, provided you go carefully. Clean everything well before applying fresh grease. All the parts and materials are available from West Marine or Defender. Good luck.
