Hello, My name is Greg Phillips and presently own a Catalina 22 and sail on Lake Sinclair in middle Ga. It is my hope to retire in 2-4 years and sail. I wanted a boat that I could keep at the lake and also trailer it to Florida, then to the Bahamas. I am trying to get the biggest boat I can sail in the lake and haul on a trailer. How would you compare the 272 vs the C25 (wing keel). Does anyone ever trailer the 272 with the inboard engine? Has anyone taken their 272 to the Bahamas? Thanks Greg

Have you sailed on each boat?

I would try to get a ride on each boat ( do as much of the sailing as you are allowed. Plead your dilema and I am sure some sailboat owners will at least drag you out for an hour or so.)then take some time in the cabin. Then make choice. r.w.landau

Trailerable boats

Greg, I currently sail an Oday 322 but my previous boat was an Oday 272. I've trailered the 272 from Mich. to Flor. several times. It's a bit large but once you get used to it your heart stops beating so fast. I've also owned a Helms 25' that was a good sail boat and trailered easily. Also had an Erickson 25' that was a good sail boat but very difficult to get off the trailer to launch. Of the three boats, the 272 was my favorite. I would not hesitate to sail it to the Bahamas. It's big enough to be comfortable on. There are ways to use blocks and things to get the mast up even though it is pretty heavy. If you get one, contact me and I will send you some diagrams of ways to do it almost single handed. Happy sailing

I sail both

I have owned 2 Catalina 25s, (one a wing) sail on a 272LE and am in the process of buying a 272. Either boat should be on dual 5000lb axle trailers for anything more than local moving, each should have a long wheel base 1 ton truck for long hauling. The head room and 1 foot of extra beam make the 272 a far more comfortable boat down below, the large cockpit, bridge deck and side decks make the 272 more comfortable to sail. The Catalina is a better sailing boat, the Catalina also has a more rugged rig and hull.

Thanks for getting back with me. A couple of questions, Poncho what size truck did you use to haul your 272? Is there anything you need to look out for, that is an inherent problem with 272. I will be in touch when I do buy, thanks for the offer. Frank, you are actually the reason I started to think about the 272. I read a comment you made about looking for 272. I have never met you, but I alway respected your opinion on the Catalina site. You say that the C25 sails better than the 272, could you explain. Does the 272 give you more of a big boat feel when sailing? Thanks Greg

RW, I meant to mention this in other response, great advise, I hope to do just that. Sail on both the C25 and 272. Thanks Greg

I doubt it

I've sailed on dozens of Catalina 25s, and I'm very sorry. There is no comparison between the 272 (w/wheel) and the 25. Aside from the sailing, which should go without saying, the 272 (again, mine is an LE w/ in-board diesel, pressure water, raritan Ph11 head, 30 gallon water tank, is just much more boat. From a sailing standpoint, the LE just sails like a dream. With a single line reef system, all lines led aft, great non-skid, wheel, better quality winches, etc. I outfitted our boat with a new Doyle Stackpak main last year and wow, it's just a great boat to sail on and to party on after the sailing is over for the day.....Boston Accousic speakers below, great Polyplaner platinum speakers in the cockpit, Garmin GPs, the quality of our O'day has made the decision to trade up very difficult just look at the tankage, etc. and quality of materials and I think the decision will be easy Come to Ninnescah Yacht Club in Wichita this spring and I'll take you sailing! We've had such a warm winter we were sailing just two weeks ago on a 69 degree day...our O'Day 272LE is celebrating it's 20th birthday this month...sailing on it two weeks ago reminded why I haven't sold it.......Patrick

gop711, I think it will be

an easy choice which boat you want but a hard choice as to which boat you want to trailer. r.w.landau

I continue to doubt it

I think the Catalina 25 is a good sailing boat.....It does not give you as much of a big boat feel as the O'Day. I might feel differently about that if my did not have a wheel which is does. The wheel systems O'Day had Edson design are very sensitive and just a pleasure to sail.....I still believe the 272 sails like a larger boat because it is a larger boat... my O'Day weighs 5300 pounds plus or minus and just sails differently. It sails remarkably like the 302. As for Mast strength, etc... Catalina makes the mast of the 25 & it is quite a different mast...very stiff....the mast on the O'Day was built by Z-Spar in Bristol Rhode Island and is more hi-tech I believe....quite bendable, etc. the side stays and back stays on the O'Day are 3/16 inch. I don't think the 25 has 3/16 inch rigging. I may be wrong, but it shouldn't be very hard to check...
