O'Day 272 mast pulley

My O'Day 272 halyard jams up when hoising the main, about 6 inches from full up. As I inspect the system, I notice there are three sheeves ganged together on a piviting block, built into the base of the mast. The idea seems to be to allow the halyard to pivot and match the pull angle. However, the piviting block seems to be floating loose in it's mount and jams up when under tension. This prevents the main from hoisting fully without undo effort.
Does anyone know how it comes apart or if replacement parts are available?

are you letting the main sheet and boom vang loose when you raise the main? They will keep the boom from lifting and thereby making the last foot or so of the main very difficult to raise. Blocks and sheeves are common and really unique to an Oday. most likely your mast is an Isomat and Rudy at D & R marine or riggrite

Thanks for your reply. The problem I have is that the swivel block at the base of the mast is floating loose, and does not align in the direction the halyard is pulling. When the halyard gets tight, the block does not swivel and the rope tries to run off the sheave and jams up. As a temp fix I rigged an external sheave forcing the halyard to pull straight on the sheave, but this is only a marginal fix. I need to get the swivel sheave assembly out so I can repair it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mike, our 272 mast is by Z-Spar....you are right, the pully's at the bottom sometimes allow the halyard line to get out of the pully..thereby allowing the line to go to the side where it refuses to allow the sail to go up....actually, ours can happen anywhere in the process....not necessarily just the last 8 or 9 inches....Also check the pully and halyard line before beginning the halyard raising..making sure no one is standing on the line where it can also pull off to the side. ..and also, make sure your boom vang and main sheet are loose enough that they don't hold the sail down....also check your single line reef line to make sure there is plenty of slack line with it too....it technically could stop you just before the top too if the reefing line were to be pulled too tight.....

Thanks Pat. As you said, I have found that it goes up a easier if I allow the boom a little freedom to move, but it still jams. I added a block pully that I tied off to the jib traveler mounting block. This causes the halyard to pull straight out of the mast, before it turns to angle back to the rope clutches and cockpit. This works OK as long as the main has no wind load. I guess I just have to be more darefull about pointing into the wind that I am used to.
It looks to me like I will have to pull the mast to get that pullyblock out for repairs... but I won't tackle tha until next bottom job in a year or two.
