Looking forward in the bilge, there is/was a small piece of plywood fiberglassed in the bottom of the bilge. This is between the bilge opening and the fiberglass 'post' that is immediately below the compression post. The wood was very rotted and fragmented and is 90% gone. Does anyone know why this was put into place? Is it intended to support the cabin floor aft of the compression post and fwd of the bilge opening? Or is it simply a dam to prevent any water that accumulated in the bilge to not run forward of that point? Does this need to be replaced? Or is it no big deal... And if I replace it, should I create an opening that would allow any water forward of that point to drain into the bilge?

The boat is a 1977 O-23. The whol piece of plywood is probably 5 inches wide by maybe 3 inches high. It just sits in the "belly" of the bilge in front of where the bilge cover is in the cabin. Between there and the compression post.

Ric, I have no such board or any evidence of any such board. Does it look like it was factory? or something installed by a previous owner? If it does not support the compresion post, the sole or anything else I would leave it out. I will just point out once again my boat is three years latter so they may have made changes. Good Luck
Nothing like it in my '79 Oday 23 either. If you do replace it, you don't want to restrict any flow in the bilge. You want any water that gets to the bilge from forward to make its way aft to where you can pump it out.
