Has anyone had to replace the teak trim that frames the companion way in the cabin? The bottom piece on my 222 is missing. I checked with Rudy at D&R Marine but he said he never had anyone ask about it before. I thought I would check with all of you before coming up with an alternative.

Thanks for any assistance you can give. I really want to keep the look as close to the original as possible.

Kacey: Attached picture shows cabin-side view of companion-way and original bottom trim on my 87 Oday 222. There is nothing unique about the bottom piece of trim. To replace bottom piece, looks like the best approach would be to match profile of your existing side trim. If you don't have the tools to do it, a woodworking shop should be able to match the existing trim profile.

Kacey,

Replacing any of the trim does not take cabinet maker skills or equipment. Access to a table saw and router would be all that is necessary.

Replacement piece does not have to be high dollar teak but can be other durable wood such as white oak. Or can be of modern wood substitutes which do not rot. And they can be worked with ordinary wood tools.

I recommend getting a piece of wood at Lowes or Home Depot and cutting to exact fit because that would be critial. Too short leaves place for water to drip in. A hand saw could work to cut to size and it could be sanded by hand to obain tight fit. Edges even could be rounded by hand.

Unless you have your boat at a full service marina who does such work, you will get best fit yourself, even if you have to do it more than once.

Its just L-shaped corner molding or trim. I too suggest checking out the lumber yard then cut to size.

Kacey,
That molding is "L" shaped and it's 1" wide X 5/8" thick Teak. Like Mich said, you could remove one of your side or top moldings and have someone duplicate that thresh hold molding with a piece of Teak.

Last week I went to two different marine consignment stores in the Newport RI area and both stores had used Teak at a reasonable price. A good local cabinet maker could possibly make that up for you and install it too. I think that this molding could be made with a table saw and a router with no problem at all. I think I would make a mocked up version out of pine first before I cut the Teak. Teak is just too expensive to practice on especially with a woodworking hack like me doing it. :D Good luck Kacey!

Kacey,
Email me when you get a chance. I have a new PC and my old Dell is being fixed. The Dell has your email address in it.
I may be able to offer you some assistance on how to get the molding made. I have one of those moldings down my cellar. It's an old one that came off my boat.
