O'Day 20 Fabric

Hi,
I just bought a 1976 O'Day 20. The bulkheads in the cabin have some sort of fabric/carpet on them. This bought was sitting for several years so the rain water stained them pretty bad along the bottom half. I can't seem to get the stains out. Any suggestions?

I'm having some problems sending this reply--I also have recently bought an oday 20 and have the fabric prob lem. I took it all out and hope to paint the bulkheads but not sure of the type of paint that I should use. I also have some other situation--flotation material in v berth.

you'll get alot of information by scrolling down this page of threads and looking at the thread called "hull liner" by Rbone. The fabric you are looking for is usually advertised as "headliner". The thread also has some links where you can begin to explore you "headliner" options, as well as adhesivie

i have an oday 20 and most of my interior had a vinyl covering on the hull which had mildew and was coming off. i removed it thinking i would just paint but when i saw the amount of cement on the walls i changed my mind. it would have been miserable job in such tight quarters, not to mention the possible health concerns. i ended up buying outdoor carpet and using contact cement to glue it on the hull. i just applied the cement over what was there. it looks alot better than it did and was alot easier than stripping and painting.

I've read several of the responses re: hull fabric--and it's replacement and I wonder why no one has talked about painting the inside hull with a moisture resistent paint. If anyone has any thoughts on this I'd like to hear them Bill

i wanted to use an epoxy paint as i had done years ago with a cape dory typhoon. however, when i pulled the covering off the contact cement that held it was very thick and sticky. it looked like a nightmare to remove. i did not want to spend half my summer removing contact cement, or kill myself trying to strip it in such a confined space.

I have residual glue also, but it is hard and firmly adhered to the surface so I bet I could paint overit with a good oil based enamel. I would do a test patch first to be sure i got good cure and adhesion. If i wasn't happy with results, i would try a test patch with exterior latex. I would not be bothered by the texture but would rather enhance it if need be with a loopy roller...much like the non-skid deck treatment.
But I am going to use fabric because it will help with noise inside. Also it should help with the asthetics, softening all the hard surface. But I did like the cleanability of the paint idea. I still may paint the rear quarter birth.
I don't like the floor carpet idea, because it would trap moisture. The fabric designed for liner dries much better. It is thinner and more pliable.
Disclaimer....I have not put my liner up yet, I have just read as much as i can, compared products online, and following forums, so this is just book knowledge. I HAVE installed house floor carpet and vinyl.

i used that cheap, thin, indoor/outdoor carpet you can find in any hardware or big box store. it does not have a rubber backing so it does not trap moisture. i have had a couple minor leaks that have dripped on the carpet, but it drys quickly and so far hasn't been a problem. might not look great, but it is functional. too bad it didn't come in avacoto green to match the vinyl cushions : )

Hey you could always put some peace sign stickers on your bulkheads and a lava lamp in the v birth!

My cloth was slightly discolored and the off white/tan color looked old. I spray painted the cloth with a light coat of white carpet paint and brighten-up the entire surface. Doesn't look new, but does look refreshed and clean.
