That is the question. I do not have much experience with bronze other than a couple of items. The original seawater pump was painted Universal bronze along with all hoses and wires. The packing gland was not painted and it is covered with green copper oxide and white salt scale.
For those who choose to rebuild - I found this tool fab directions somewhere and it worked great. Take an allen hex key and shorten the small end so that the overall width is less than the shaft diameter. Then grind a flat on the bottom and then grind the top so that he thickness is about 1/16". This tool can be worked into the weep hole side of the seals and then can be lightly tapped to push the seal out from each side

Because they sprayed everything beofre they installed the motor, including the damn hoses. Actually a good idea in retrospect 'cuz you knew the engine had OEM hoses!!!
Same reason: because it was NOT on the engine. And because it lives in a different environment. Your pump should not be slinging salt water around like your stuffing box does.
No need to paint it.
Have you read my link reply #5 on page 1, where I included a picture of when I cleaned my rebuilt pump before I remounted it?
Yep I read it and I knew that I had seem something about an unpainted pump but could not remember where.
I have spent too much time in research and now it is all running together.
