O day 222 Mast destroyed

The mast on my o day 222 came crashing down yesterday while racing in 15mph winds. It bent in half just above the spreader and then sheared off at the tabernacle. Totally destroyed. I think the forestay pulled out. Anyone know where I can begin to look for a replacement mast? I think it's a 1988 and spar rigged.

Bummer!

That sounds like typical spreader failure, or the mast section buckling at the spreader base. The mast is highly loaded there. By chance is it a z-spars z-190 mast? They were susceptible to that.

It is z spar, not sure what you mean by z190. Yeah broke at the spreader. Any advice? I know of d n r marine. Thanks!

Yep. Z-spars masts on the 192 and 222 have a reputation for being a bit weak. The boats often came with a Dwyer mast, which is more robust.

I would call Rudy at D&R, and see if he knows anyplace up around him in New England (where there were many O'days) that might have a used mast.

Worst case scenario, you could buy a new mast. Rudy sells full masts. I don't know if they are Dwyer (Damco) or Z-spars. I suspect they would be Dwyer.

You could also probably get from Dwyer. Z-spars parts are also available from www.rig-rite.com, but I don't know if they have whole mast sections. I know Rig Rite has Z-spars mast foot castings, etc.

This is really sucky for you, I'm sorry. Reminds me that I don't know how old my standing rigging is, and I should just replace it all to be safe, even though the visual inspection has been ok.

The mast on my O'Day 222 broke at the same place as your. I found a welder who repaired it at a fraction of the cost of replacement. I have been sailing 2 Summers with it, without a glitch. I feel it is stronger now than before the weld!
