OK, I know it's really early and it's still cold outside but the weather will break soon.....I would like some suggestions for several new destinations in the NYC area. I keep my boat in Jersey City and would like to keep the sails somewhat short - no all nighters to Shelter Island....Has anyone sailed to Point Lookout in LI? Can you anchor near Point Lookout or in the Jones Beach Inlet?

some good ones....

Rob, a few good ones with in a few hours sail/motor for you (and VERY fun) City Island and Mahassett mean you have to transit the East River and Hells gate (easy if you time the tides) If you've never been to these places, they are worth the trip. City Island - 3-4 hrs. Manhassett bay (3-4hrs) Sandy Hook NJ (2-3 hrs.) Atlantic Highlands (same) Raritan Bay/Keyport/Perth Amboy (2 hrs.) Great Kills Harbor (1-2 hrs.)

City Island

City Island is awesome. The main strip running north-south on the island, is full of great eating establishments. My favorite is on the south end, east side, but I forgot the name.

Point Lookout

I sail out of Point Lookout (Town of Hempstead East Marina) and there really is no place to anchor or stay overnight. Jones Inlet is one of the worst inlets on the east coast and is in dire need of dredging. There are quite a few fishing boats that come out of Freeport as well as Point Lookout, so things get pretty rough. There are a few locations near the Short Beach Coast Guard Station that you could anchor near, but there is really not much to do or see. If you are willing to go a little further, Fire Island is where you should plan a trip to. Here you will find several marinas, as well as some anchoring spots. Here as well it could get a little rough as the ferries and water taxis come and go all night. I would plan on trying to make a reservation at one of the State marinas. Fire Island has plenty to do and see.
