Notching Rudder for Outboard

Has anyone notched their rudder to accommodate a fully down outboard? On my C 27 I tilt my OB up a hole. When I motor at hull speed the stern is pushed down, the lazerette floods and the engine just skims the top of the water. It would be nice to get a Booth rudder but I am saving up to do the bottom. Can I cut a notch out of the rudder about the size of a hand, if so how would I seal it up?

Same problem here on my '74. I faxed Catalina for their ideas on a recommendation for a modification, and David Graas there faxed me back a drawing showing the notch. (This has obviously been an issue, since the drawing is dated like 1988 as I recall.) Haven't done it yet, but I plan to at the next haul.
