No reverse thrust

Has anyone with the 27 and 9.9 Evinrude had any experience with little reverse thrust. I'am told there are other than standard props that may be available or perhaps some other invention that may help. Any input at this point would be appreciated. Thanks, Ray-"Tinkertoy"-Bohemia River-NE Chesapeke

Sailboats don't go backward

Ray: Not sure what to say.....Sailboats don't reverse well at all...Your motor may not be the problem....Keep you rudder as straight as possible...Make sure that your motor is as deep as possible.....And good luck:::::

9.9

Can't speak for the 27 as I have a 25, but I do have the same motor. I think something that would help is to practice reversing while out on the water. That way you will get a feel for how much throtle you need when it's really important...like trying to dock!

Governor?

Could be this. Several years ago, when I bought a new Evinrude 9.9 for my old Coronado 25, it came with a type of governor to protect the usual fishing boat user from swamping his jon boat over the transom if he hit full throttle in reverse. The "governor" or "rev limiter" only allowed you to get about 1/3 throttle in reverse. Once I removed the limiter, I could get full throttle, good thrust and everything was fine!

Reverse Thrust Kit?

Ray, I had a Johnson 9.9 on a boat many years ago, and suffered from the same problem. I could achieve full throttle in reverse, but because the exhaust is thru the hub of the prop, there was too much cavitation in reverse. I vaguely remember a reverse thrust kit I bought from OMC (now Bombadier?). I can't remember the details, but one part of the install called for drilling out three holes on each side of the lower unit, just below the cavitation plate. I remember thinking I'd ruin something by drilling into the gear casing or something, but by following directions it worked out perfectly. In forward, no difference. In reverse, most of the exhaust came out of the six new holes, leaving the prop biting into clean water, and giving a lot more thrust. Maybe call Bombadier and ask them about it???
