I searched for this subject in the archives, but didn't come up with much. I have a Nissan 5-horse 2 stroke on my capri 22. It's been running 2 seasons here in the brackish Patuxent, and is due for a new water pump impeller. I bought a replacement, along with another gasket, as well as a service manual so that I have a reasonable hope of doing this job properly. But, given that I have never done work on an outboard beyond winterizing it, I'd like to ask all of you if you've done similar work yourself, and if there are any pitfalls for me to look out for that the service manual may not tell me. I'm generally pretty handy with tools, but have done very little engine work.

I did it ...

... on my Nissan 9.9. No sweat, just work carefully and draw a picture of the impeller so you know which way to pitch the blades.

Apparently the drive shaft or transmission shift lever (I'm not sure which) is spring loaded. The lower unit comes apart OK but you have to be able to compress the spring in order to reassemble the motor. Otherwise you'll be about 1/2-inch shy of where you need to be. I'd read the manual carefully first. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

Ironically, Peter...

...I was watching "Ship Shape" on TV this weekend (what else can I do in the rain) and they addressed that issue with a Mercury 115. What they did (and they called it a trick) before removing the lower unit was to put the shift in reverse and twist the prop in reverse until it locked. This aligned the shaft gear with the spleen in the powerhead and made re-assembly easy by eliminating just what you described. (For What It's Worth)

Go to Nissans web page and they have instructions and cautions there. I haven't done mine yet but was looking at doing it. let us know how it went. Rob Morton

thanks

I just finished looking at the manual. I basically read cover to cover, since my outboard knowledge is severely lacking. This looks like the type of job that will be very tough the first time, but won't be so bad the next time. The spring for the shift shaft is mentioned, but there were few details on how to handle it. (more info. present on what NOT to do than what I SHOULD do) I will certainly check to see whether the tip for the Mercury will help me with my Nissan. Speaking of which, I have gone to the Nissan Marine web site, but didn't see the above-mentioned instructions. I'll have to check it again. I hope the manual doesn't steer me wrong. The motor is an '87 model; I could only find manuals as far back as '92. But I think that almost everything will be the same. I used to work in a marine store that sold new nissans, and I couldn't find any differences between mine and the new ones. 2-stroke technology hasn't changed much. It will be a while til I get around to doing this project. Work issues are taking up all my free time right now, but I'll try to remember to post a follow-up when I get it done. Thanks again, guys.

update

Thanks again for all the advice. I made some time in my schedule and worked on the motor yesterday. The job is going reasonably well, considering I'm new to this stuff. A bit of advice for everyone trying to do motor work: try your hardest to get the proper service manual. I couldn't get the exact book for my engine (too old), so I bought a Nissan manual and told myself, "how many changes could they make to a 2-stroke in just a few years? It'll be fine!" This turned out to be not exactly true. The manual was still a good purchase, but it's only a starting point - there are many differences between my 5hp engine, and the ones in the book. I have yet to put everything back together and test it, but I have the new parts I need, and I have removed the old impeller. And thank god I did this before trying to take the boat out. When I tested the engine in a bucket of water, no cooling water came out. Disassembly revealed the cause: Half of the impeller blades were gone, and bits of them were stuck in the tube that takes the water up to the motor. Wish me luck putting everything back together!
