With tonight's waxing moon, I'm going sailing in Galveston Bay out of Kemah. I find it cooler, and it gives me a chance to practice light identification. How many enjoy night sailing?

Hear hear! The middle of a lake or a couple miles out in the ocean are ideal for stargazing. I find the darker hours also tend to scare the stink pots off the lake.

Watch out tonight the bay (and lake) will be full with the boardwalk fireworks @ 9:30 last week there were around 230 boats out for them

I keep trying to convince my wife, who hates the hot weather, to go on an evening/night sail with me. The few times I've been I've really enjoyed it.

I am also a lover of night sailing, peaceful, mostly nobody out there, more stars than 'in town' at home. My lake is deep so it is not tough to stay off the rocky parts with a depth sounder.

A lake, though, gets fisherman PB'ers who think night is still high throttle time - get home in a hurry no matter what. Anyone remember Dinius?

Still, a very nice feeling to move along in the quiet darkness.

I have done it a couple of times. The latest Memorial weekend. No moonlight. Usually only one or two barges in channel to worry about. WRONG. It is shrimp season and between the harbor and N side of Cat Island were about a dozen boats circling like NASCAR. Gave my untrained eye a real workout in light identification!

We love night sailing at anytime, but when the dog days of summer hit, it is the best time to sail. We know all the lights on the shoreline so we go on just about any night. Full moons are still special though.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
This is something that I don't do. It is a mine field to get in and out of the harbor due to crab pots. They even put them in the channel sometimes.

I love it and also if you want to go a great distance in quick time you have to sail day and night nonstop.
It's a necessity to be comfortable with it.
even when day sailing there's no guarantee you'll get back before dark.
you may plan on getting back before dark but you know what they say about plans.
so it's important to be comfortable navigating you local waters in the dark.

i have loved night sailing since i was a kid-- we did on my uncles boat-- a bunch of the family would get together and do an overniter on the huson river---- was awesome...fog at night was eeeerie but beautiful....
when i cruise i am with simrad, able to pull longer shifts so is more funner....longer passages, rather than just 2 day ones with a shorthanded crew, wheel driven autohelm and 4 hour watches--- is much more enjoyable!! i love my simrad system-makes up for an entire human body...works perfect even in 60 kt winds with quartering seas..... impressive. we did 12 hour watches from ensenada to mazatlan. easily.
makes for much more time to play with getting full moon pix under low light and just enjoying the moon and stars and sailing and freeedom and alladat schmaltzy stuff....the angles f the moon on the seas and the fishies jumping thru the tops of the waves as they surf with ye-- porpoises and flying fish were great companions -- saw whales and really enjoyed the peace of full moon, waxing moon and night sailing in general. dark moon is a lil different-- but is also beautiful-stars seem brighter than when moon is out.
